That's exactly what I was thinking last night as I was making "beams" to put under the coop. It was HOT then I thought about February and -4 and it was a lot better. I will be incubating more wellie eggs soon! woohoo!

OMG! I found you all! Where have you been! I'm so glad everyone is back. MJ...my mommy is actually in Chicago, so I would have a long trip to see her. But just was there a couple of weeks ago.
It is so HOT and MUGGY out there. I'm so sweating just filling waterers and doing chicken chores. Refuse to take the dogs for a walk. Just too muggy. Dakota hates the heat...he has way to much hair.
I think you were right, MJ. Everyone just had to much heat yesterday and zonked out early. Well, stay cool, my friends and hope you have a good day!

Hi Everyone! have been SOOO busy at work/home haven't been on in awhile - Miss reading everyone's comments! I think I have a broodie hen - She's about 2 yrs old - a brahma - she's CONSTANTLY sitting on a nest - ALL day/night - we don't have a rooster - I keep picking her up - she's stopped hissing and pecking at me she's so use to my intervening! Well, anyway, I put her outside to drink and free range, but she takes a drink and then runs back into the nest - any suggestions?
I've also got a rebel who keeps flying/jumping over their fencing - we've clipped her wing (one) but that doesn't seem to stop her - any suggestions? Hubby wants to put a weight on her!

Just wanted to say "Howdy." I don't chime in very often, but I check up on y'all every day.

I don't mind this heat too much. It is an excuse to slow down a bit, drink iced tea, ignore unnecessary chores... The heat sure beat that five below zero crud... and the snow. I'd rather sweat, filling waterers, than worry that my birds have frozen in the night. My coop is in a thicket of trees & everyone appears fine.

Wishing you well!

Good Mor... wait, it's afternoon already.

Good Afternoon, Michigan BYCFers!!!

I like using BYCF because it makes me think of my county fair, BCYF... Berrien County Youth Fair. sigh... it's coming up pretty quick this year.

The 10 chicks made it through the night, they are one week old today, and still no pasty butts! They are going through food terrible fast though, and they've almost finished off 10lbs. of starter, minus a bit of waste due to a spilling accident. They are also pooping a LOT. I have been changing the bedding a couple times a day, but I can't afford to go through that much shavings. I think I'll stick to cleaning once a day until they go out to the tractor and get closer to fair time. Then I can worry about keeping them clean.

A quick question about the cornish: they are walking on their drumsticks already instead of their legs; kinda scooting about the brooder. And they don't stand for anything except the water which is slightly raised. The fuzz is worn off of their bellies, unless it's just super-thin due to growth. Is all this normal? I'm starting to ration their food supply today, so no worries about that. Otherwise they are happy and healthy!

not sure what happened but I lost one of my new babies this morning, she was eating and drinking last night when I got up to get a glass of water at about 1:30, but when I got up at 7:30, she was just laying down and I went to pick her up and she had no energy at all, tried giving her water for over an hour and then she gave up (daughter is heartbroken b/c it was the offspring of her araucana that we lost over memorial day) but I tiold her we still had the other one and he seems to be as strong as can be, running around the cage, eating, drinking, chirping up a storm, the one that we still have was like 3 times as big as the one that passed on....
so daughter and I buried the little fuzz butt this morning, she has been at the cages side since keeping an eye on the other one, I saw tears this morning while we were burying her and I just about lost it, cause these were her 2 and she has been tending to them since friday when we picked them up

I hope everyoen has a great day and stay cool

Sarah,
are you giving the cornish any vitamins? We have never had any leg problems with any of ours. My kids raised them for fair years ago and the biggest weighed in at 15 lbs. We let them free range a lot back then too. We now have 21 cornish x in a brooder box, and yes ma'am they are very messy. I clean the shavings out once a day. They have gone through a 50 lb bag of food as of today. We got them 2 weeks ago. It is normal for the feathers on their bellies to be thin. They don't really move around a lot, mostly just eat, drink and poo.
