It's 1:32 and there another death - this was one of the white crested polish- found it laying on it's back in the middle of the pen - I've just put them all back in their houses so that the mom's have to sit and the babes can snuggle and sleep - maybe they shouldn't be allowed outside yet?? - What a disappointment!

they should be okay. this is odd.

I just read somewhere that I shouldn't let them outside until they are at least a month old!

that is a bunch of horse apples. momma's take their babies out two days after they hatch all the time. it's normal life for them.
i am going to refresh waterers and collect eggs. going to ponder your babies while i am out there.....

This is probably silly, but can the chicks reach the food and water ok? I had to put in small dishes for them when I had a broody with chicks because our regular hanging feeder and water was way to big for them. Then I had to fill them frequently because the hens would empty them quickly. Finally put a cage of them so the chicks could run and and eat and drink but the hens wouldn't fit in there. My chicks were with the whole flock at the time though.

Thanks Vicki - yup, the chicks can get to the food and water just fine - I've got a set of each in the run and in the house area for them - I'm stumped. I am going to keep them in today because it is chilllier here - 73 - ok, here's a ? -
the moms aren't really sitting so that the babes can snuggle up (when I had them outside) - if you're suppose to keep your brooder at 90degrees the first week - how are the chicks staying warm enough if Mom's not sitting so that they can get under her for warmth - that's why I think that perhaps the other 2 failed - thoughts? Thanks Vicki and MJ! Nancy (hustonn)

When we had them enclosed, that's exactly what moms were doing - sitting and the babies were huddled up under them - since we put them in Broody Hall -Sat morning - the moms are rarely sitting so that the babies can warm themselves up under them - yesterday it was very sunny and there were laying in the sun and running after mom(s) who were up and about the majority of the time - - I think I'm going to keep them cooped up in their house part of Broody Hall for a couple of days - see if we lose any more w/this method!

mine aren't snuggling either, but mine have a few days on yours. and mine aren't bantams either. they could just have failure to thrive basically too.

it's just 'what it is'. it is frustrating for us, but the animals look right past it. so sorry. keep your eye on them. maybe a little vitamins in the water if you have them? (i don't use anything like this, but others do, just a suggestion.)

The chicks are nestling now that the moms are "confined"! Watch, the two that died will be females and I'll be left w/all males! MJ, you have your chicks outside w/their mom's? - It's only 73 and cloudy here - how about there??

yes, the chicks are outside and running around. um, it's pouring rain and i don't know the temp right now.

in the summer, i boot babies out. these babies hatched on the 21st i believe.

the mom's are in coops with doors open and they have access to big runs and other chickens and started young chickens.

Ok, ok, ok, already - I'm retracting that thought and those words! Thanks for the nudge to do so!
