Hey fellow michiganders...

I'm in Detroit and very interested in starting a small flock here. I've been doing lots of research and getting quite excited. I do have a question however... Could anyone suggest a local farm where I could acquire about half a dozen healthy chicks, or hens this spring? If anyone knows reputable poultry people please let me know.

thanx!

i know Detroit and the subs inside and out, what part of the D are you in???

Hey miss_jayne!

Thanx for the offer... I'm really willing to be quite flexible since this is my first experience with chickens, and I'm open to suggestions. I was originally thinking about some bantams, but larger birds could be fine here too... would love to have a few breeds to see what we really like for the long run.
BTW- as per your question, my wife and I live downtown with our loyal Labrador in the Woodbridge district of Detroit.
Our plan is to build a decent sized coop in the back and begin enjoying our new pets and the food they provide.

thanx for your reply!

Cheers!

wow! my hubby used to work at the Olde bldg. downtown.

i lived in Clinton Twp. all my life pretty much.

i will have Black Australorps, Orps, Barred Rocks, Leghorns, EE's, mixes yadda yadda. sex links etc. it's a chicken madhouse around here.

my husband works in Troy and can even transport. you could meet him at Oakland mall if you are interested. let me know, and i will make it so!

PM me for info and we could set a price etc. if you are truly interested.

and again, welcome!

Hmmm... thanx for the advice about the bantams. I would like to be able to let the chickens run in the yard when we are home and aware, I could see how bantams might fly over the fences more easily.
I am definitely interested in dealing with you for our chickens. Would you suggest we start with chicks or young chickens? I know we could bring up an old hampster cage or aquarium for temp residence if get very little chicks. Get me more info!

thanx again!

do you want all ladies? i am assuming (ha, we know what that means) only because you are in the city. cockerels can be very LOUD!

it all depends on if you want to deal with chicks. they need a little extra care, and it will take at LEAST 4 months for them to start laying eggs.
the 'upside' is you get to build a bond with them. not that they will decide to be all 'snuggly' later on!

you'll need a brooder lamp to keep them warm until they are feathered out.

started pullets will be easy breezy. just open coop door, apply chicken, feed and water. ta-da, you've got chickens! and some will bond with you.

Thanx for all your helpful info!

Yes... all ladies for sure.

Maybe pullets would be a good start for us...

I sent you a PM miss_jayne... hope it went through.

Well, I'm off to band practice. Have a great evening, everyone!

Neal

Miss Jayne,

Yes I did call you...I got excited that someone was interested in your meaties!!!

Welcome Detroiter! I agree with Jayne on the bantams, ours mellowed out the older they got. You also have to use more bantam eggs to equal a large fowl egg.

I have to go drag the kids in again. Jon plowed and now there are mountains to conquer! It is time to eat supper.

Sarah

Oh and it is snowing again!

thanks for calling, Sarah! you rock!

Rick plowed twice last night and also today. he's whipped.

still snowing here also.

we had delicious brats from the pork i traded for chicken. so awesome. not fatty or anything. man...we eat like kings most days! we are so thankful!
