We used to get them early in the spring in any quantity you wanted to clean. Five gallon pail could be got with one swoop of the dip net....But Michigan's Department of Natural Resources is to blame for the decline in smelt, and as far as I am concerned perch too. The DNR in its infinite wisdom decided to implant this black nasty bird called a comorant (sp) which consumes a vast amount of fish per day. The comorant has eaten more than the lakes can supply. The bird was introduced at least 20 years ago. When I lived in the U.P. we lived in a commercial fishing area (Garden Peninsula) and I still talk to some of my friends from there. They tell me the comorant population has declined substantially (maybe the DNR has wised up and thinned them down)and they are seeing perch fishing increase a bit. Hopefully along with that the smelt fish population will see a increase.

Good morning all.

Yes Steve they dropped that black nasty bird off up here. The reason that they are not doing so well lately is that someone keeps dropping skunks off on the island they nest on, imagine that. Those skunks really do a number on those eggs. Poooooooor birdy's NOT

The DNR have really done a number on the UP. We had (notice had) trumpet swan pairs on the lake 4 pair, they have been coming for years and nesting. The DNR killed them last summer said they weren't native to our region, neither was the red or grey wolf but that didn't stop those buzzards from dropping them in our back yards anyway. The timber wolf was what we use to have.

Sorry DNR makes my blood boil.

As a rule I like the officers in the field (not always) but the desk jockeys well I can't say it. And why kill trumpeter swans the are endangered and they are to native I would have raise cane and then some. They let some people here kill all the mute swans on there lake cause they poop and there was a large number so a blood bath rather then taking actin to control the numbers I could go on for days about this but I will spear you

oh my goodness! my head honcho Tom is getting his beard! i felt it while petting him and then i looked, there it was sprouting out!

my little (30 lb) babies are growing up.

Good Morning all!! Uggg....snow. I was hoping it was over. I know, wishful thinking. There's a little on the ground. Hope that's all for at least 10 months. That warmer weather sure teased us and made us want spring even more. Have a great day......

Oh the locals went nuts but the deed was done and there was nothing done to the DNR officers who did this. Trumpet swans are protected under federal law.

Hi All!!
When we used to live in the UP, the smelt were so good that we filled up a truck bed in 15 minutes. Then a lot of people bought up all the areas we used to fish in and won't let people in there. We fished by the Manistique papermill, Marblehead, and Milliqout, think I spelled it wrong. God willing, we will be able to find a nice place to go and enjoy the fish again.

Checked on all of our chickens and they are laying pretty good. Our little silkie is down to 6 eggs, but still on the nest. Hubby can't understand why I would like to get more. I enjoy them so much.
Happy birthday again and hope all have a great day!

It is getting pretty hard to write with four cats all wanting attention.

It wouldn't be so bad if they were kittens, but they are all big cats!

It is not snowing yet, so I had better get some stuff done outside before it showed up. Take care all. Myrna

Just got home from Lansing.

Had a scary situation.

Downtown there is a pet store my son wanted to go to. After we were done and just getting in his car, a guy tells my son as he is shutting his door that he (the guy) almost got his hand closed in the door. Basically laying a guilt trip on my son that it was his fault so he could get money. My son gave him 5 bucks to get him away.

First off, WTH are you doing so close you'd have your hand on my sons vehicle. If he would have tried that with me, I'd have told him to (blank) off. My son said 5 bucks was better than a bullet in the head.

I have a licensce to carrry a pistol.....tonight I wished I had it (my pistol) on me. Just to be safe. I am still so mad.

It was over in no time, but......

Next time I go downtown Lansing.....I'm packing.

Yep vicki that is the store, happened right in the parking lot.

A few years ago Judy and I went to a bar with some friends just a bit down from there and there was a breaking and entering that had just happened as we got to the bar....cops, bystanders, etc. I didn't know it was in that part of town or I would have tried to convince my son to go during the day.

Yeah, great store, but I prefer the day too. Not a big fan of Lansing at night, especially certain parts. I feel safer out here in the country, with neighbors a couple acres away. I can hear coyotes yipping at night and feel still feel safer!
