Good morning all. I've been up for the past hour just trying to catch up on everything that has been posted since I was last on. It's amazing how much can be added in such a short time.

Today is supposed to be a pretty decent day and then tomorrow it goes down hill. At least it will be in the 50's. That sure is much easier to handle than the below freezing stuff.

I've decided that I need to admit it. I think I have gone over the edge. As if my flock wasn't big enough, I had to decide to have a flock of bantams. I got the 2 silver seabrights from Brit, ordered 2 more through a friend, told Crystal I will take here extras, and then last night asked Michelle to hold a pair of orpington bantams for me. Plus I still want to get some Lakenvelders. I wonder, could this obsession with chickens be an indication of the onset of senility?

Thats what I was thinking about myself.

I have decided to order 25 sex link pullets from Tractor Supply- raise them up and add them to my brother in laws group; my plan is to put enough hens in there that the males cant do such damage. hopefully by the time the babies grow up, he will have wised up and taken out the roo surplus. Ive gotten my husband angry with me- told him I was ashamed of his brother, a farmer, who knows better.

That and my little cochin babies under my silkie and turken are so darn cute- they are like little bumble bees running around out there- how long do hens keep the babies with them before they start laying again?

Wish I could help answer that for you M2EA but I'm real proud remembering something from last week. I'd be afraid to tax it with trying to remember something from 60 years ago.

I know but it's still dark and I haven't had enough coffee to think real good yet.

Good morning everyone!

Busy day yesterday, one of the things I needed to do was re power my Troy-Bilt Horse. I've had that tiller for a long time and last season the motor gave up.....so after putting a new motor on yesterday, I should be good for a long time.

My oldest son put in a garden at his place last year, but the rocks and skeeters were both terrible, so I told him he could just help me here and we would put in a bigger garden for both families. My old garden is 30 x 40.......yesterday we worked up a new 24 x 48 area. Between the two we should raise and can enough for us both.

Youngest son got a 2 week layoff for a shut down.....so I told him he could work for me till he gets called back. Today is his first day working for me....we'll see if I don't fire him by tonight!

Morning everyone!

I have an unexpected day off today. DD is home with a fever and very sore throat. Guess I will be running to the dr. when they open.

Big Russ got our garden all rototilled too. The chickens thought it was heaven out there scratchin' around in all that fresh dirt! I was great entertainment for them and us!

We are doing the same thing, Steve. We were going to till up part of our yard, but my father - in- law has 40 acres. He said that if we help him put the garden in, etc., we can just share the bounty. His soil is much better than our sand. We will see more of them regularly doing this as well. I just wish it wasn't 40 minutes away! Dad is nearly 80, still working delivering auto parts, farming with his son in law, hunting and fishing. Pretty amazing guy.

Yesterday was a full day for my dog......

He's been adjusting slowly to all of the new things at the farm, not to mention new freedoms. A couple of days ago he discovered that there are cows across the street

I was mortified that he ran over barking at them... they stood their ground... was secretly hoping one would kick him to teach him to leave things alone
tongue.png
... and he now ignores them.. THANK GOD! I'd have had to shoot him myself if he was going to continue that behavior. Then yesterday he sees the Amish buggy coming with the horses..... he barks a bit and runs behind the buggy for a few feet looking like a complete idiot! Luckily they were laughing and thought he looked cute I guess..... mortified AGAIN! Wondering yet again if I am going to be able to make this work. Then he meets a lady on a bike
roll.png
luckily he comes back in the yard when my DS calls for him. AND then the guy that stops to pick up some items we put out.... he stayed put in the yard that time and came in straight away when I hollered for him ::good dog::

Now... in his defense..... yesterday started out with a real hoopla! We were inside painting and cleaning when my DS says "There's a chicken in the front room!" so I go outside to see what is going on and I hear chickens screaming.... I run out (with the dogs) and I see that huge very dog chasing my chickens all over the yard again! I didn't even notice the guy trying to catch the dog. Halo runs up to the guy... I'm nervous because I don;t know how Halo is going to react with all of the commotion and frightened chickens..... Halo sniffs him and then runs up to the dog... butt sniff and then it happened... he REALIZED what dog this was and what was going on. Halo tore into him! So now the guy panics and runs up to the dogs..... his mothers dog is fighting back.. it's at least twice the size of my dog. I manage to grab Halo's collar... I know, never get in the middle of a dog fight..... Halo stops... the other dog does what? Runs over and starts chasing the chickens again! Halo is going nuts watching this dog torment his birds. I'm useless because I'm holding Halo back... the guy is useless because the dog doesn't mind him and he doesn't seem to know how to wrangle an animal

Finally my DH comes out to see what the commotion is all about.... 5 mins later he finally manages to catch hold of the dog. We apologize for the scuffle but remind him that Halo is VERY protective of his birds. All birds are accounted for. DH promises me next time he'll take care of the dog if it tries to kill them again. And now they know what happens when their dog comes across the highway and down to the coop.

Yesterday was just a bad dog day. My dog was a real butt.... but he did a good job protecting his birds. He was just a little too edgy the rest of the day.
