I so know what you mean. We have Buff Orps, Barred rocks, and grey Silkies. The Orps come in some wonderful colors that I would love to get. I also had such a hard time not getting Cochins, and Sussex. Once we were ready for chickens we also got a couple of turkeys from TSC. Just BBW. Good for dinner. So I found MJ and now we ended up with 4 turkeys that were supposed to only be 2. We have 2 sweetgrass and 2 Bourbon Reds. What beautiful turkeys they are turning into. Next spring I will be getting some more color and variety add into my flock. I am looking forward to it.

I always wondered when I'd have an occation to use that "Smilie"...well tonight was the night LOL. I unfortunately didn't use my gut instinct about a certain duck egg in my bater and KAPOWEE!!!!

<--- Imagine that but yucky and not a chick...more like nasty nasty rotten egg!

Yet again the vomit face is needed! I had to clean my bater and then I carefully and thoroughly checked the remaining 14 eggs for any bad ones, there was one more. SO, I have 13 good eggs in the bater right now. These eggs are sooo much easier to candle then my brown chicken eggs! I can actually see the embryo and viens, which makes it that much easier to candle!

And the egg was just as frickin' nasty as I knew it would be. Bits of egg shell all over the bater and it actually splattered on the top half of the bater! ARG!

Thats pretty gross. I can only imagine what that smelled like.

I don't mean to interrupt but are you guys talking about the Oakland County fair? I live in Lapeer and I'd like to go to it. I haven't been to a fair since I got into chickens, I never really paid attention before, but I'd like to see how it works now.

Yep I'm already trying to figure out a way to get to chickenstock. I'm going to LA a couple days after that, but I want to go anyway. Who needs to pack ahead of time?

I think Vicki and Jen are talking about the Oakland County 4H fair thats going on right now. I just want to get a little more info on it.

Good morning all. I just figured out how to not wake up at 4am. Don't go to bed until 3am. I've got to go in a little while and pick raspberries. Sure do like freezer jam made with them. Several years ago I sent several types of venison sausage to my oldest son and I included several jars of raspberry jam. My granddaughter called me to tell me that it was her "favoritest" jam in the whole wide world. Shortly after that they were visiting some friends and during breakfast Morgan was eating her toast very slowly. When the hostess asked her how she liked her jam she replied that it was okay but it wasn't Opa's jelly. I now supply her with about two dozen jars each year.

Opa, you have some very beautiful birds.
Sarah, I hope you had a happy birthday.
It took my a while to catch up on all the posts made this weekend.

Good morning all! We live in Oakland County and we're looking for a place to buy feed. We have 19 layers and also raise a couple batches of Cornish crosses through the summer. We just had some processed and reveiwed our costs, the prices we're paying for feed is astronomical. Can anyone offer suggestions (i.e. grain elevators, other feed stores, etc) that would make more sense? We just went through approximately 600 lbs of feed for this last batch of birds so we'd like to buy bulk.
