Who stocks DE in Michigan? I can't find any, nor does it seem that any of the stores I go to can get it. I'm in Monroe County but don't mind driving a bit to get some.

Those pears sound wonderful!! My grammy used to make crab apple rings like that and can a ton. They were always my favorite!!

Feels like fall here already!! I hate to see what little of a summer we had go away.

I'm not sure how much light my girls will need this winter? I am new at chicken raising. Should I put a light on a timer in my coop for them or just leave one on all night?? Would that be too much?? Since your already here in wonderful MI thought you might be more help that some one in TX.

I'm located about an hour north of GR and 1/2 hour south of Big Rapids. I'm nestled nicely here in Newaygo County if that helps.

Good morning ISA, Hillbilly Hen also lives in Newago.

About the use of lights. There are two trains of thought on that. The first is that if you want to maximize the egg production of your flock you should provide them with 14 hours of light. This can be accomplished by using a timer.
The second is that it is perferable to allow your flock to go through natural cycles. A hen will only lay a predetermined number of eggs in her life. By allowing her to cycle naturally you will prolong her egg production life.
Both work, and you still will get the same number of eggs from the bird, but method one gets you those eggs sooner.

I have a question for anyone that might be online right now. I have chicks in two seperate rabbit type cages in the garage. They are old enough so that the flooring doesn't hurt their little feet

I use pine shaving in the poop catcher underneath the cages. Today is clean out day and I thought I read somewhere that all the shavings (and of course poop) were good for the garden. Does that sound right or am I considering a baaaad move here because of the pine shavings?

Good Morning Everyone!

Rachel has 5 chicks that are out and ready for the rest to come and play! 3 mixed ee and 2 purebreed.

Off to get chores done since the girls are at a sleepover. Emily's drake is really cute too!

Thanks Sarah. I'm thinking since my garden was a weedfest this year and we're not getting boo from it I'll just put it in there now. I've read a lot about composting on here but figure hum... hopefully it will be o.k. to "compost" in the garden over the fall/winter for the spring

MJ, you should can some of those pears. When I make them I like to add cinnamon red hot candies to the syrup that I pour in the jars. It gives the pears a very pretty color and they taste fantastic.

i would if i could, but i don't have a pressure canner. (i know, shock of all shocks! MJ without all the kitchen tools! no Kitchen Aid mixer either!) hoping to save up for that and a grinder for wheat. one project at a time. but i've had those before and they are delicious! just had some applesausce like that at babymakes5's house when we went to KY. so very good!
