Well I believe its because hens are not loud like most barnyard animals. They dont need a huge barn to be housed in and dont make a 10th of the waste of other livestock.

Where I live you must have 5 acres to house 1 horse and 1 acre per extra horses. I could have 24 horses here on my property. But oh my gosh would that be a TON of waste a week and my pasture could never support that many. They would be living in pure mud.

But with 28 acres I could house a couple thousand chickens and still have pasture for them to feed on.

Good afternoon everyone.
MJ the next time you see my boys you so have to talk to them about Godzilla. They both love it. We have a lot of the old movies on DVD. When Collin was little he had a strawberry mark on his neck. To get him to eat his veggies we told him his extra head were grow bigger like Mecha King Karora. He really wanted 3 heads. He would scarf down so veggies to see if it would grow. We even have Godzilla action figurars at our house.

Happy Birthday Hillbillyhen!!!

Ok, the broody Buff Orp has me feeling bad for her. She has plucked all the feathers on her belly off so she can get these darn fake eggs to hatch. We have a rooster with the hens but he is a silkie and misses his mark sometimes. I do get an ocssional fertilized egg though. Maybe 1 every dozen or so. How do I know if an egg is fertilized without cracking it open so she can have 1 or 2. I know kinda late in the season but they can always come inside till they are big. The big brooder will be empty before they hatch.

Hello all, thanks for all the wonderful birthday wishes! That really made my day. I guess my family is planning on a get together on Saturday to celebrate. No I did not get to sleep in today. I had to be up early and off running errands. Tried to take a nap when I got home but that did not happen so I got on here to play catch up. Wow y'all have been very chatty. That is awesome about the turtle. Don't know if I could eat it though.

chickinlickin -- I used a mix of apples from the farmers market. The vendor had a mixed basket (three different types), so I took them. I've heard it is good if you have two or three varities for applesauce. That's what I used for the carmel apple jam, too. I only know that macintosh were in the mix. The other two I am not sure of. It was delish in the applesauce and the jam. I'm sure if you used just one kind, it's not going to hurt anything, either.

Thanks Chikeemomma and CATRAY -

We've got an orchard about 3 miles away with all kinds to choose from.... probably will get over there this weekend and pick up a variety.

My aunt has a pear tree that's loaded...going there, too!..
