Opa: Do us all a favor and go get one of the new 2010 Artic Cats lol Then I know for sure, we wont have any snow.

Sarah: So sorry you and your family are ill. We've been very lucky here so far. No flu bug at all, just normal fall allergies.

At least today it wasnt to awful cold and no rain. I got a bunch done. Cleaned up the yard, dug out the burn pit and put some more kennel panels together.

Anyone wanting a horse? I have a 15 yr old Polish Arab out the top producing Polish Stud of all time. "Probat" He has 5 yrs of dressage training and does western pleasure very well. He's available to a good home FREE. He would make an excellent youth horse or equestian horse. Most important is that he is not kept stalled up all the time. He is a rescue and spent 5 yrs in a stall other than being ridden a few times a month. Here he comes and goes as he pleases and is very happy that way.

I'll get pictures posted of him tomorrow.

Hi, everyone. Just wanted to stop in real quick. Hubby is keeping himself (and myself) quite busy during his 'vacation'. When we got our first hens this Summer, he quickly built a coop inside our garage. We inherited 3 huge outbuildings with this farm when we bought it, and one of the outbuildings is supposed to be a 3 car garage. It's got 3 garage doors, but it's huge. It could probably hold 10 cars. So hubby cut a hole (door) in the back corner, and built a coop w/nest boxes and roosts on the iside. Then we fenced in the outside and built a run. Since it was a quick job, he didn't completely finish it out. And since it was Summer, it wasn't at the top of the priority list. Since then, he also built the sheep pen next to it. So he ahs spent some of his time the last couple of days running wiring for electrical sockets for heat units in the water tanks and heat lamps in the coop that can turn on with a light switch. He's putting a ceiling in tomorrow. He also put a light on the back of one of the other outbuidings where the yak corral is. We were able to turn the light on and watch them when we gave them some grain tonight. It was cool! I'm tired, though. Love it when he's home, but Jeeez. The man knows how to keep us hoppin'! The ducks are doing well. I'm getting an egg a day out of Daisy now. Still no eggs from the Cayuga's, though.

Opa and Oopsy Daisy, I miss you!

Newbies, welcome!

Sarah, for Pete's sake girl! Get well!

HBR, I was at the U of M game on Saturday...well, I was at the tailgate party beforehand. We tailgate in the Victor's Lot every home game. I don't like football, so I guard the tailgate stuff while everyone goes to the game. This time I was reading "The Sheep Book" by Ron Parker. Anywho... one of our friends got a doe recently, and brought some steaks for the grill. Oh...My....Gosh!!!!!! It was so incredibly wonderful. I love venison, but I've never had venison that mild and wonderful before. I'm determined that my husband is going to take up hunting!

You got the awsome snow blower, and my husband, the new tractor that he just made a weight for so he can plow lots and lots of snow. And because of all this you are probably right no snow. I will be so sad

if I have to look at grey and brown all winter. At least when the snow is on the ground everything seems so much brighter

even if it isn't really sunny.

Thanks to BYC I have had the privilege of becoming friends with people from all over the world who have become very dear to me. The opportunity to meet so many like minded people is just incredible. After the hunting season concludes perhaps I can come and visit. I would love to see your yaks. I probably could be put upon to bring you several different cuts of venison for you to try including summer sausage.

A few years ago I gave some venison to a friend whose wife would cook venison for him but wouldn't eat it herself. After she thawed the roast and opened the vacuum sealed package she remarked to him that what they had wasn't venison. She told him she didn't think it was because it didn't smell like venison. She ate supper with him that night and claimed she thought it was the best roast she had ever fixed. I have an aunt who won't eat any venison unless I have given it to her. Her reason, taste. Properly killed, field dressed and butchered venison should not have a gamey flavor. If anything good venison should have a slightly sweet smell.

I have butchered some where around 500 deer over my many years of hunting and one of my several appearances on Fred Trost's Michigan Outdoors was a two part feature on butchering deer. To insure the best possible wild game experience for your family you must start thinking about caring for the carcass the moment you before you pull the trigger. Proper bullet placement to ensure a fast kill reduces the acids that build up in the flesh imparting a flavor and toughening the meat. Skinning, cooling quickly and removing all traces of blood from the carcass makes a huge impact on the smell and taste of venison. Removing all fat, sinew and membrane adds greatly quality of the final product. A deer commercially processed my way would cost hundreds of dollars because it's so labor intensive. However since the final product is something that I, my family or friends are going to be eating, it is a labor of love. Venison is also substantially lower in cholesterol than beef so it healthier. Tonight we had a venison roast that I seasoned, seared, and cooked all day in a slow cooker. Granny loved it and said she would defy anyone to know that they were eating venison.

Opa -- You were on Fred Trost. I'll have to tell the hubby. He's probably watched you before. I don't like venison, either, due to the smell of the meat. Used to eat it growing up and then one day I couldn't stand the smell of the raw meat or the meat cooking. Maybe we'll have to get some butchering tips from you!

Good Morning everyone
just wanted to pop in and say Hi, I have been very busy for the last week, this time of the year is very busy for my work, and thank goodness chuck has been working.
I hope all is well your way

Well, since I'm up, I am going to soak in the tub for a little bit and read a book, then head off to Guns Galore... I've got a pair of cap and ball navy colt black powder pistols that I've never shot. Anybody familiar with black powder? Want to take these out of black powder season so..............

Wow, Opa, thanks for the explanation about venison. I guess my friend at the U of M tailgate party did it right, then. The steak that I ate tasted just like very lean, yet still juicy and flavorful, beef steak. You and Oma should come over for dinner sometime! I'm a stay-at-home yak mommy, so I'm always here. My husband loves to entertain, and weekends are always good for visitors. Whenever you have time in your schedule for visiting, let me know!

Oh, your mention of Fred Trost brings back a memory. When I first moved up here a few years ago from Texas, I saw that show for the first time. I was cleaning my hubby's house (then my fiancee), and had the TV turned on just for background noise. I stopped to watch when I saw a woman hunting rabbit with a bow and arrow. I was fascinated! When hubby came home I asked him about it. I remember eating rabbit when I was a little girl on the farm. Grandma always fried it like chicken, and it was yummy! Hubby was quite amused that I was interested in bow hunting.

Good Morning!

I am finally feeling like myself this morning! Yea

Jack and Nathan are still coughing and sniffling. I am going to call my mom and let her know we are staying home for Thanksgiving. My SIL cannot be around anyone sick, due to her chemo, so we will just keep our germs home. We do have our 1st family Christmas get together 2 days after Thanksgiving, so hopefully we will be better by then.

What a great offer on the horse! If we had our barn built, it would be a possibility. not until then though.

Have a great day and enjoy the warm temps!

Sarah
