Good morning all, it sure is nasty outside. The chickens took one look out the pop door and decided that they would not go out today. So I closed the door to keep the wind from blowing in. I don't blame them, I am staying in too.
Hopefully all those who are having this bad weather will stay safe if you have to venture out.
Hillbilly Rooster, did you get the pm with my number and schedule? DH was thinking about turning one of our "sheds" into a chicken coop if we get more chickens.

The "shed" was actually our bedroom which was added on to our trailer before we built our house. I think it's about 12x15. That should house a few more chickens for me.

YakLady, it's funny, my BIL has a chicken named Fricken too. What kind is yours?

Jason I've been smoking meats for over 40 years and have tried just about everything possible. The smoker I'm currently using I built from an upright freezer. A commericial version comparable to mine is over $5000.00 and mine cost about $200. If you like to build one next spring I'd be glad to help.

HBH, my little Fricken is a white Silkie Roo. My husband and I rescued him from a drainage ditch at the end of a neighbor's driveway on a main dirt road. Someone had dumped him there, and he had been living there for at least 4 days. The neighbor told us about him, and asked us if we would come get him, because she was afraid he would get killed by a predator. We went over and caught him and brought him home. He did fine all Summer, because he had plenty of space to run away from Jarhead (my boss rooster). Fricken also really likes the sheep. Here's a pic:

I feel so bad for him now that the weather's cold, though. There's nothing for him to forage, and the sheep won't let me feed him. And if he's in the coop, he's being bullied. If anyone on here wants a little Silkie roo, I'd be happy to give him to you. I love him, but I want him to be happy. Right now he's miserable.

YakLady, he is sweet. Is there a possible way to fence off a divider in your coop? That's what I had to do in mine to put the three teenagers in, after a couple of months they are wanting to sleep in the bigger part of the coop with the big chickens.

So cold today

I did get up and head out to exercise. Glad to be on a treadmill! Even though it is boring. 2 miles in and tomorrow the long run, 4 miles.

Wind blew the cover off the tractor pen for the ducks...

Hope everyone stays warm! Hot cocoa is on the menu for lunch!

BRRRRR!!!!! Where is the smiley icon with the icicles hanging off him??? Trying to stay warm here. Yesterday we lost our barn in a bag, it moved about 10-12 feet and partial collapsed, leaving everything that was in it exposed. Bummer! We moved the hay into another barn, the cages and supplies will have to wait. The barn has made it through 2 winters, was hoping for more!! When this storm dies down, DH is going to try to put it back where it belongs and repair it if possible. Luckily no critters in that barn!!

Stay warm everyone!!

Mine come out for a second and right back in so we shut the coop door and have the radiant heat on to keep the water from freezing. We did put a big window in the coop so they are just hanging by that watching the blizzard going on outside right now. I think the window keeps them from cabin fever.

ALL of my chickens, ducks, turkeys and guineas are outside in the weather! i must have a bunch of toughs! or they just know i wont baby them! hah!

just a little fyi....feeding 'warm' foods and waters actually DROPS your body temp. it 'feels' warm but it causes the body to drop temp. we think we are doing 'good' but it's a misnomer. it's like people drinking alcohol to 'warm' up and then dying on the streets. (it thins the blood and they die.) warm foods and waters keep dropping the body temp as it fools the body to think it's warmer than it is. try keeping that to a minimum. animals are built to weather the storm. let them weather it.

went out for a lovely breakfast today with our youth pastor's wife and their daughter and then we tried our hand (or feet, i guess) at ice skating. it was fab. now i am home and freezing! have a roaring fire in the fireplace that Hannah built with the blower going and going to make a big batch of tacos for dinner with some spanish rice. yum!

I'm not overly impressed with this wind and cold. I thought this morning I was going to turn into a icicle before I finished clearing out the drive and a path to the chicken coops.

Maybe this is the smiley that Vicki is looking for.
