Morning all! Anyone ready for spring??? I know I am!!
One more family get-together today and then I think we are done for a while!

Crystal it is way warmer there, I have a lovely 10* at my house right now. Not lettting the chickens out today, way to cold, I think the high to is 15* Burrr. I think I will bake some bread and clean up the house.

Opa those are just med sized tube socks cut down each side up about 3 inches from the toe. I would BET you could use childs tube socks and make them work for the combs. I have a big bag of childrens socks Crazy Chicken Fever gave me to freecycle off. So I'll make a couple today and put them on my Isa's and see how long they leave them on. I'll keep ya posted. GREAT IDEA!!!

LOL! Opa, you're too much. You sound like my husband. All he could talk about yesterday was how nice it is to have his home back. Hehe!
Oopsy, your pups are adorable! Do you ever have issues with the dogs chasing the chickens? I've been thinking about getting a playmate for Macy, but I don't want anything that would harm the critters. Macy is a handful in herself. I have to watch her constantly, because she's so unpredictable. Most of the time, she's great with the animals. But then, for no apparent reason, she'll start picking on them. I think she's just trying to get them to play with her, but I'm not sure.

I have been training service dogs, search and rescue and drug dogs for many years. I find if I take them around new critters and tie the dog to me while I do chores, they lose interest in them after a bit of time. Now my dobe, english mastiff and dane females do not bother the chickens at all. As a matter of fact my dobe female will herd in the hens at night to the coop if they are not all accounted for. She will then if I dont watch her close, get a little ruff and pounce on them if they dont move fast enough. Its always a behavior I get down on her for, but its like she just cannot help herself. As soon as she does it, she'll back off and bow her head in shame. But I still do scold her anyway.
Now my male dobe would kill and eat a chicken in a heartbeat so what I do with him when he's loose and I cannot keep a constant eye on him is put a cage muzzle on. He can still eat and drink without issue and my horses and chickens are safe. You can find them online pretty reasonable. I pay for an XL one, $40. They are humane and work wonders. And a great training method for young dogs.
Now these 2 babies just seen the chickens for the first time this week. They both are into everything at this age and very curious. First thing the did was chase them and start pulling at tail feathers. So right away I tied one at a time with 2 dollar store leashes and dragged them with me while in the chicken house. Isis is now a bit shy around them as my huge blue cochin roo picked her pretty good in the rump LOL Danu, the blk is fearless and its going to take some time with her Im sure to get her to leave them alone. But I have all the time in the world to do it.
Ive always told customers, make sure your current dog is just about perfectly trained to your liking and not any real bad habits. THEN and only then, get another puppy. As that older dog will help you train the pup. As the bad habits will always transfer dog to dog. Its their nature.

We are pretty fortunate, the dogs we have right now could care less about the other animals. We have a dobe, boston & bulldog in the house, hopefully the new boston puppy is the same. They are interested in eating the poop
but that is about it. Our bulldog is a rescue, we got her last year, she is older, so we weren't sure how she would react. Well, our screen door latch was broke and one day, the main door didn't shut tight and out she comes while I was out doing chores. I had left the pasture gate open while I was cleaning and heard the geese kicking up a fit, look over and there is Maxine in with the geese, so I run over there, all worried, but she was just wandering through, checking things out, totally ignoring the screaming, hissing geese!! It was hilarious! Our dobe is so big and ferocious if someone comes to the door, until they walk in, then she is a cream puff!!
Seriously, our cat has beat her up before!!
We have had dogs that were not good with other animals though, and that is really hard. We had to be diligent and even then, sometimes accidents happen. I would research breeds that are not known to be prey driven or get an older dog that you already know is good with other animals.

We have one female one male right now. The other is a cross I think ( Olive Egger). They are from Wynette. We call em the Wynette Boys, aka Houdini and Stevie. Houdini is HUGE, and has tried to take me on a couple times. Lately, he's thought better of it. Stevie is terrified of me because he's the one who gets bag balmed.
The female Roxi is pretty big, and just started laying a couple weeks ago. She was kind of flighty when she was smaller, but has grown into a very friendly, and laid back girl. She doesn't lay everyday, but that could be from it being winter plus just starting to lay. She has very pretty dark colored eggs so far.

Elloitt is so sweet when I have to put vaseline on him, I do it twice a day and he just lets me pick him up and I get the job done. However if he is on the roost then Ruby the RIR always tries to peck me when I try to put the vaseline on him.
