HBH - thanks! Would you mind taking a look at my page and telling me if my penned in area is comparable in size to what your brother in law may have? I'm hoping I have enough room in the pen to incorporate 2 or 3.....

Kathy, I just checked out your site and you have a pretty nice set up.

I can't tell how big it is but I think it looks about the same size as my BIL's. He also has a kiddie pool in the run for the ducks and geese. He lets them free range also whenever possible. He also had a lot of chickens at one time because he had Phoenix's that went broody and hatched too many babies. He got rid of most of his chickens so now they aren't so crowded. Are you able to let yours free range at all?

Thank you

Unfortunately my husband gets angry when I free range because they like to poo on his cement at the pole barn. Of course, then they poo on the picnic tables and chairs also. Can't really blame him. I used to free range them every day I was home. Now when the weather changes I don't know what I'm going to do because I absolutely LOVE having them out and about

You might be right. Doesn't bother me either way, male or female. Cotton is such a cute chicken-butt either way. Does Mr. Fluffy have a comb or wattles at all?

No, no wattles. He has a smallish walnut comb, but I couldn't get a good head on picture. He won't stand still! He likes to dance.

I don't think the bearded silkies get wattles. My friend has the non bearded silkies, but my daughter thought they looked creepy.

She looked at Shelley's web page, and liked her silkies. They didn't have the creepy wattles, and she had the colors she liked. So, she decided she was going to chickenstock and getting hers.

LMC...It's hard to tell by the pic...but based on what my roosters' combs look like, I'm gonna guess a pullet...BUT, without a better pic of the comb area, I could be wrong. Based on the age of your Silkie, it should have a very pronounced comb by now. My roosters have very distinct combs and all of their male offspring (that I have raised/seen) have pronounced combs by 3 months of age.

Well hello and speak of the chickenlover!

Cotton has almost no comb whatsoever. It's just a barely raised area where the comb would be. I tried to get a better pic myself and couldn't. Little thing does not stand still for nothing! The other night I was tucking all my babies in for the night and heard someone cooing away. Lo and behold it was Cotton. I stood there for over 5 minutes just listening to her coo and talk. It was strange. Never heard any of my other birds do that. I couldn't tell if Cotton was calling the rest of the birds in for the night or just having a discussion with herself

It was definitely neat to witness.

Silkie hens do have the sweetest little "conversations". And they make such wonderful broodies and mommas. I've got a black Silkie hen that is giving me the "sign" that she's going to go broody on me...so I'm going to let her set some BBS Silkie eggs...much less work for me!

Yes, I feel your pain. I'm about ready to smack around some of my chickens unless they start laying eggs. Of course I'm kidding but I was getting almost 12 eggs a day until the frigid temps set in. My Bantys stopped laying all together and my POL hens that had started laying stopped. I get only 2 eggs a day now. They better earn their keep
