[Opa]

I just got back in the shopping for Chickenstock. I bought 10 dozen hinged plastic eggs and some wrapped hard shelled candy and bubblegum. Granny is now filling the eggs and once she's done I will probably have to go out and get some more goodies. The bubblegum I bought has a hard candy shell and looks like a speckled egg. I had David try a piece and he says that it it really good so I will definitely go get some more. Do you think 10 dozen is enough?

I thought that a egg hunt just before lunch might be enjoyable for the little kids. Does anyone have any imput as to an upper age limit. I want all the little kids to have a nice time and am afraid that the older kids might get the majority of the eggs. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Opa -- at church they have a Easter Egg hunt for fifth grade and under and the young children's area is separate from the older kids. And at my Uncle's the toddlers get a head start (not very many kids, though).


Had to cull one of my meaties. It just wasn't doing well. It is smaller and has been laying around with it's eyes mostly closed for the past couple of days. It wasn't feathering out well and it hasn't been eating. Kinda sad -- I've never done it myself -- hubby usually does it.

My flowering crabapples are leafing out. My garlic is growing nicely -- Spring is definitely here! Glad we did get that rain on Saturday. We needed it here! Have a great day!

For all you gardeners -- when do you generally plant your lettuce and cabbage. I usually plant it at the beginning of June with most everything else, but I know it can be planted earlier because they like the cooler whether, right?

Well I just went and got some more stuff at Aldi's. They didn't have much left but I did get a couple of dozen plastic eggs that are filled with fruit juice candy. I also picked up some chicks that are filled with playdoh. I think I'll put a note inside 3 or 4 eggs that can be redeemed for the chicks. Bluemoon and her daughter Cass have volunteered to hide the eggs and I have asked Cass to run the event. I'd rather not do it so that I will have more time to spend visiting.

I've often worried about extension cords getting unplugged. One solution is to lightly tie the two cords around each other so that there is not pressure at the connection points. We have not had a problem since we started doing this.

Opa are rule for egg hunts is if it is hidden on the ground it is for the little ones if it is up higher it is fair game for the older ones. But if a little kids reaches one up higher it is ok, but not for the big kids to pick them up off the ground. Another way we have done it is divide how many kids by the amount of eggs and the kids are only aloud to find up to that number then they are done. That is what we did Friday with our Easter Party for my kids, cousins that I babysit for and some friends that came over too. Each kid got to find 13 eggs, which gave the little ones practice at counting. We have TONS of plastic eggs if you want we can pick up something and fill 50 or so too. My kids are 7 and 10 and thinks egg hunts are the funnest thing ever. So I have no problem adding some eggs to yours.

Opa, as far as age group goes- my daughter is 14 and thinks egg hunts are super fun, and she is really good with the little kids too.
I think if you just set the rules up in advance or sent them out in groups..ie: five and under, get a five minute head start...six to eight- two minute headstart on down the line would be a fun idea- I also like the idea of waist level and below is only for the younger kids..
I really wanted to say though, YAY for you! That is a very great idea to have an egg hunt.. we should also do that race with the kids where they have to carry the egg on a spoon...I remember being a teenager playing a game where we were in two rows and we tossed an egg to our partner..and then each row would take a step back each time the egg was successfully caught...until there was only one team left with an unbroken egg..the details are scrambled though, because I totally stunk at that game. Ended up with egg yolk on me very early in the toss..lol.

Has anyone bought chicks at Destiny Farms in Brighton? I have been trying to find 4 or 5 silkies (Buff, blue or grey and possibly even white or black) and cochin or frizzled bantams. They are out right now, but have some hatching this week and I can put in a request to have them hold a few for me. I live a ways away from Brighton, but really would like to get a few of these breeds before the D'Uccle in the brooder get too big to accept them as flock mates and haven't had any luck in my area finding any of these breeds.
I was just wondering about the quality of their silkies and cochin chicks at Destiny Farms. These will be just pets, mostly, but would really like them to be of the prettier quality

I would much prefer to buy from a breeder if anyone knows any within driving distance that might have some right now. I'd rather pay more for "better" quality.
I will probably be looking for bantams at chickenstock. By then we will have an addition to the coop and run and I will have room for more

The egg hunt does sound like fun, Opa.

I'm not sure if we'll be able to make it but I think 11 or so sounds like a good cutoff. Around here they usually string rope or caution tape between some trees and say one side is for the younger kids, 5 and under or so, and the other side for the older half, 6-11 or so. But then you've got the fact that this is the BYC crowd we're talking about and from talking with most of ya'll on here I would expect everyone's kids to be pretty well mannered. It might be okay to leave them all together. The big kids might actually be able to help the little ones.

briana, that would be great if you would do that. I have 12 dozen filled already but the more we have the more exciting it will be for the little guys. With everyone's imput I will come up with guidelines for the event. The egg toss sounds great for the older kids and maybe we can use live chicks as prizes, I'll fill my incubators 3 weeks before so hopefully we will have plenty.

When the date gets a little closer Wynette and I will come up with a schedule of events. Plus if there is some kind of game any of you would like to organize and run please let me know. I would like this to be as enjoyable as possible for everyone, especially the kids. If it weren't for kids there would never be a reason for Opas.
