ShellyB: I had geese 20 some years ago, mean nasty darn things all the time. Bite just to bite....beat you for no reason. BUT these Sebbie's are not like that at all. The Ganders will hiss and pretend they will bite , you walk towards them calm and they back off. The geese show no sign of aggression in the least and the reason I bought them.

Now for the good news...too funny. The gentleman that came to Imlay Sunday called a bit ago ..said he would be at my house around 6pm today with his waiters on and a long fish net. He would walk out into the swamp and chase them out and my Dobe loves to herd the birds for me, and that she could walk them home. I agreed to make supper for his efforts. Hung up....I look down towards the swamp NO GEESE...oh my Im wig'n. Get in the truck and drive down. They are gone. Neighbor is cutting his grass, I said you see the geese, he turns around and says "Carol they were just here while I was mowing around the swamp" I went to the next house, gave her my number and sadly drove off. No geese to be seen.

So I decided to drive up to my next door neighbors long drive... and here are 4 waddle'n butts going across their drive towards my property. By the time I pulled the truck in, got some pellets and scratch grain and walked out back...those darn stinkers were already in my pond. Guess the neighbors riding mower was a monster they didnt wanna deal with in that muck hole. So now they are back in a nice clean big pond and grooming. My Pekins were quack'n away like WHERE THE HECK YOU GUYS BEEN? MOM IS SO ticked LOL life is good. Now Im gonna have to pen them up until breeding season is over as to get some eggs for back up like Olive says. Was hell seeing 4 Ulysses S. Grant's like sitting ducks in the swamp down the road. Lesson learned. Raise ducks and geese as babies and teach them to come home for supper and be locked up.

Now please everyone cross your fingers they stay put until back up comes to help me round them up and pen them.

I can see it now, NEWS FLASH "crazy chicken fever" has to burry mom as she stroked as her Sebastopols crossed the road going to a muck hole.

And to think I have 8 more coming next week....CALL ME NUTS!!! LOL

Yeah I called him back, think he thought I was nuts as we just chatted about it 1/2 hour before. He's still coming out anyway...I think he might be a bit smitten as Im into hot rods, farming, birds, tractors...tomboy type. And he's a mechanic, restores hot rods and is as handy as they come. I enjoy all that stuff too. I am far from a girly girl. As most of you have seen that Ive met from here. I love to putz out in the barns, wrench on old cars, get dirty and laugh about it. Something my late husband enjoyed. But this is all new to me, this dating stuff. I am , who I am, either hang or dont. Im too old for the "drama for yer mama" type crap. LOL

OH forgot to tell you all, he made me the BOMB nest box and brought it with him saturday to Imlay. Wooden 4 place for my Light Brahmas..huge thing but works well. Almost as nice as the bucket ones Opa made me for my Isa hens. I am so lucky to have such great friends in my life.

My chin is up and that light at the end of the tunnel that has my name all over it, well its so close now I can almost touch it.

I say this daily to my late husband,

"I wish Heaven had a phone so I could hear your voice again. Thought of you today, but that is nothing new. Thought about you yesterday, and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and pictures in frames. Your memory is a keepsake, from which I'll never part. God has you in his arms.. I have you in my heart."

Vicki: you have geese, do you have Sebbies? As the new flock Im getting next week has 2 show stock gangers in it from Holderreads themself. She paid $300 each for them, the crazy woman LOL I will only need one as to keep for an outcross for the 3 geese I have now. I also have an extra splash gander available that it stunning, if anyone would like to house him??? He's very sweet.

Yeah Yeah, FLOCK - me's like that!!!
So the builder was out on Sunday and guess what !!! Huston's Happy Hens are getting an 8x8 addition and construction begins next week! With the 4 SLW's 2 EE's, 6 Wellies, and 12 Cinammon Queen chicks that we're picking up tonight we're going to need the extra space!

Opa, one of the other black orps that you gave us has been broody for about the last 3 wks and we've had her sitting on a couple of golf balls....we're going to see if she'll foster the cinammons!

You should already be able to tell. They start showing subtle differences around 2 weeks old, by 3 weeks those differences are pretty obvious in, I'd say, 99% of cases. Every once in a while one will slip through a late bloomer but by 5-8 weeks even the late bloomers are usually pretty obvious.

Pros of having a rooster? Fertile eggs, crowing, eye candy.

Cons of having a rooster? Fertile eggs (if you sell them some people care), crowing (it annoys some people), additional responsibility/liability.

Honestly, we don't treat our roosters any differently than our hens. I think one important thing with roosters is that before you take one on you are sure you are capable of killing him should he get too big for his britches. If you're someone that gets too attached/is too emotional and don't have someone who can do it for you, don't get one. Otherwise, go for it. A good rooster is always nice to have around.

Fertilized eggs could be a selling point if you make it one, they have about half the cholesterol as unfertilized eggs. Just another positive for us roosters, hehe.

Seriously? I had no idea. That could be a very good selling point. Where did you find that out?

Wow, everyone must be plum wore out from chores! I wanted to post the latest pics of the ducks - 9 days old and boy, do they grow quickly!

Ooopsy, I think my BBS cochin roo is sterile - not a single egg hatched after my broody BO spent the last 3 weeks nurturing. And I had 3 cochin eggs under her.

I thought I would be loaded up with chicks, but nothing!

Hi All,

catching up on the boards- geese and dating and composting barrels and cute baby ducks Oh my! Good luck to everyone and I am glad that the geese came back home and very nice composting barrel Opa.
Thanks to those that talked about the underground fencing- I researched that a little bit after reading what you said, I have not yet found one that I could possibly afford with four dog collars. I think the hot wire is what I will do. I will be able to put it down low enough to deter three of the four dogs and not have to worry about Bubba the tortoise hitting it. I think the beagle and the Golden need the zapping (well definitely the weiner dog but she is in the house during the day while I am at work). I found the corner of the fencing where the beagle got into the flower bed. One stupid corner where I ran out of staples and it wasnt attached to the privacy fence. It worked like a doggy door for her. Fixed that.

My Mama Turken is sure a joy to watch with her eight babies. The little buggers are more independent than she would like- they were staying right in her feathers and close close by her, but now they scatter out further and further and get her to all sorts of fussing. She was fun to watch trying to chase off a squirrel that wanted nothing to do with her or her babies- he wanted bird seed. She wouldn't let him come anywhere near the seed and once he ran up the tree, he told her off in squirrel chatter.

I brought home a bag full of crickets from the pet store yesterday evening particularly for my spoiled Carmen- the turken enjoyed them, and her little banty babies even got in on the action. HOWEVER, my Polish juvies RAN from the cricket-monsters..hahahahahahahahaha
lau.gif

My ducklings from the pet store continue to grow and make me happy. Big babies now. They are not pekin as I was told, they are runner ducks. I told the Pet store yesterday when I picked up the crickets- and was appalled at their answer. The guy "pssh'ed" me, and said "We sell them once a year at Easter for the novelty. Nobody keeps them long enough to even know what type they are"...I shudder to think of all the abandoned/neglected/killed ducklings out there.

My rescued duck is not a Pekin either. On the duck forum, I believe we determined that he is a call duck cross. I am not quite sure what to do with him. He is absolutely terrified of me and does NOT get along with the duckling brats. I have to keep them separate. They tried to remove his eyes, and he tried to remove their wings. Then he kept post at the water and the youngsters couldn't get any until I figured that out. So, back into the dog crate for him. Cleaning that out is a chore- and he is convinced I am eating him and flaps like crazy- got me in the nose with his wing. I will be looking for a new permanent home for him to go with space that he wont have to be confined in a dog crate and water to swim in.

I hope you all have a wonderful day.

Good Morning! Everyone out doing chores? Sure is quiet.
There's a stray rooster on I69! I kid you not. Coming home from dinner Mon night, there it was, in the grassy area in the middle of the expressway!! Could not believe it! Kristin (Krisrose) and I went back with a pet taxi, can of scratch and a tarp to capture this poor rooster. Yeah, right! Going down the expressway at 70 and looking for the roo. Spotted him and pulled off to the left. I'm carrying the pet taxi and scratch yelling Heeerrrrreeee chick chick chick! That roo was fast. Kept ahead of us running to try to get in front of him. I kept running, he kept running... What a site we were chasing the roo in the middle of an expressway!
lau.gif
He finally just flew across the expressway and went running off. End of story? Not quite. Wednesday, on my way to Lansing, driving down I69, and there he is! On the right side of the road pecking along with not a care in the world. Can't figure how to catch him. He's gonna be road kill one day soon. So, anyone want to come and try and round up a stray roo?
Well, gotta get going, the dogs are staring me down to go for a walk. Have a good day, all!
