Been following along kind of lurking. I don't have much news from my end to add but this sentence shouts something at me.
This girl may have accidentally injured or killed pets before, probably hamsters or gerbils. Her parents may just run out and buy her a new one as soon as possible without correcting the behavior of treating animals like toys.
It is terribly sad, and I feel bad for what you and your daughter are going through sevenchickens.

I wouldn't allow the girl near any small animal if I could control the situation. If she is around any sort of pets, I would be carefully watching her behavior.
She may decide to treat a larger animal, such as a dog, like a toy and get bitten because the dog is defending itself. She would probably go unpunished and have sympathy while the dog is put down to protecting itself from harm.
I've seen a lot of stories where kids have obviously been cruel, intentionally or not, to an animal and the animal is punished for it.

The girls just came in. No luck on finding the chick

Fishing net won't work too many trees, bushes, vines and old brush to do us any good. I am going to go out and see if I can see anything. Wish the bird was white or yellow!!!!!

Sarah

I hope you find you chick Sarah. Good luck.

Well the whole lawn is finally mowed. It used to be a 5 hour job, but with the new tractor and a 62" deck it gets us down to 3-4 hours. I kinda forgot that I like mowing the lawn. I listen to music and no one to bother me.

Well said!! That is exactly how we got our dog!! She is a chocolate lab and she is great! She was my brother's dog. They live on a small town lot in Fenton. Their daughter is a terror with animals. She has been bitten by my parents dog, who is very sweet and they (my brother and SIL) call him vicious. He has NEVER snapped at my daughter who has been taught to respect animals (she is 7 years younger than my niece). Anyway, they buy this chocolate lab puppy. Cutest thing EVER. We go over to visit to see it and my husband and I both commented that if the poor dog lives a year with her, it will be a miracle. Just the way she was treating it was sickening. Did my brother and SIL say anything to her. NO. You can bet I did. She would say "she's my puppy, I can do what I want".

This girl was 6 at the time - old enough to know better. About a 8 months later, my brother calls and says that they are putting Truffles to sleep because she bit their daughter and went after my brother (while she was in his cage, he decided to take her bone away from her and she growled at him - well DUH!!!!) My husband lost it! Said I will be over in an hour to get her. My brother said that in good conscience he couldn't let a vicious dog go on in the world - once they taste blood they want more. UGH....

Come to find out, it was an accident - they deny it. She was playing ball with the dog and pretended to throw it and held it. The dog lunged for the ball and got her face with it's tooth. (this came from my 15 year old nephew) The dog was still a puppy!! Long story short, we have had her for 5 1/2 years and she has growled at my daughter (4 years old) once and that was totally my daughters fault and we corrected her (my daugher) They are the best of friends and she is a wonderful loving dog. The only blood she is out for as the squirrels, moles, woodchucks, opossum, coons and the dead field mice she brings us every day!

My niece has been through several little pets since and now they got her another dog!! My hubby said at least they got a nice breed so that when we have to rescue it, we will like it!

It bothers me that people blame animals over people in just about every instance of "attack". If an animal bites, snaps it's teeth or even growls, its vicious and mean and should be put down. That isn't the case a lot of times. If a kid pulls on a dogs ears, tail or fur, it's going to get angry and be in pain, and it will growl snap and bite.

We had a small dog, 25 lbs at her heaviest. She was a sweet lovable dog, until you put any child under 5 years old near her. Around small children she would growl and tuck her tail under her in fear. She had a nasty, mean kid constantly pull on her ears, tail, fur and face until she snapped at him. He came crying, uninjured to us and we told him he was hurting her and that is why she snapped at him. After that she couldn't be around little kids, and every time a kid would run after her and corner her, we would have to intervene to keep the kid from getting hurt. There were moments, if we were sitting right there with her to make sure the kids were nice, she wouldn't growl or snap.

Our neighbors however, had a large beagle who took to chew on furniture because no one in the house would train the dog. The dad got tired of it and took the dog to a friends house "to live on his friend's farm".

My dad works with the guy and overheard him bragging about how he went out and had his friend put the dog down. Not a pleasant man.

I'm glad to hear you rescued your dog Truffles from an unfortunate fate. Animals shouldn't be treated like toys, and anyone that has a pet put down for their own convenience (i.e. "I'm tired of this one, I want a new one") should be barred from owning an animal again until they can prove themselves capable of caring for a pet.

What's worse is that there are people who treat their children like toys as well. (insert shudder here).
Some people in this world make my stomach turn in a bad way.

sevenchicks I am so sorry for your loss. I too would not let that child or her parents at my house. I am hard core. The neighborhood kids know it they so much as chase a duck or chicken they are BANNED from the chicken yard, mean or tease a dog or cat your banned from my home too.

Laura I cleaned out some of my inbox.

Have a great day everyone

The chick is still alive but free in the hedgerow......We put food and water out for it finally. I figured it would come when it got hungry, but no luck.

Off to go and check and see if we can catch it.
