Yeah. We recently got the hotwire up and running so that we could rotate pastures. This happened in a pasture without yaks present. I had thought maybe a hawk, but I don't think it could take a full grown, flapping and fighting drake. It had to have been a couple of foxes or coyotes. My guess is that they picked off the young ones throughout the day and then the drake probably tried to jump in to fight them off. That would have been when we heard the commotion. It's just wierd that there wouldn't be any sign at all. Poor duckies. They love going down to the creek to play, but after yesterday I'm not letting them.

Sorry to hear about the ducks.

Today was the smoothest morning I have had so far with introducing new chickens into the coop. We put the 4 mama hatched in the layers coop. They have been able to see each other for a few weeks now. And last night I noticed that whenever Rodney went to their fence the girls would all run over to him. So it was time.

The cochins and silkie are in the bantam coop, not as smooth due to alot of young cockerals but not bad. Right now the bantam coop has most of our bantams, 2 silkies to be moved over there later, and the rest of the chicks we hatched but are to young to be with the layers and turkeys. We also moved the 13 packing peanuts to their own bachelor pad.

Due to it all going so well I got laundry hung outside by 6:30am. Second load by 7:30.

I've got six broodies...... and six nest boxes.

So, I let the other chickens free range and lock the broodies in the run. Ever see 6 broodies forced off their nest? It's like having six menopausal women having hot flashes!

Two went and flogged the poor bunny in there.

It's sunny and beautiful out, so best get going and put my protective gear on and rearrange some mean chickens. Have a good one....

All of my bantam cochin girls are broody. Poor little rooster sits in there on the roost looking lonely. Nobody wants to go out and play! They are all puffed up trying to be Big Cochins. Looks like a pillow fight erupted in the nest boxes.

Hello Everyone!!!
Had a blast down in Indiana at the Swap meet today!

I managed to find some speckled sussex that I've been looking for forever!

I now have 2 pullets and a cockrell. They were hatched out in April so they're still pretty young but they're very nice looking birds. I am still trying to find about 8 more hens/pullets if anyone has any. I won't be able to come to chickenstock as I have a rabbit show the same day

but I think I could talk Vicki into bringing them home for me! heehee

My husband just went back to lock the doors on our coop and it turns out our English Mastiff got out of the invisible fence and into the run. She killed 8 of our RIR's, 2 australorps, and 4 EE's. I have 3 RIR's left, 2 that were up too high for her to get and 1 that escaped the run and was hiding. We are so, so sad. I don't want to be the one to tell the kids in the morning. She got our 3 favorites, Mama, Red and Runny

I could just use some hugs right now

Wow, that was quite a storm that rolled through here last night. I'm not complain though. All that happened in my area was lots of rain. When I look at the damage in Dundee and hear about the deaths in Ohio I'm not going to complain that I won't be able to mow the grass until later in the day. Watching the news and they said that 28,000 folks are without electricity. With 3 days left for the eggs in the incubator I'd be sick to lose them.

Man those storms had us in the basement. We are only 20 mins from Dundee. 1.75 in of rain has our garden flooded and the yard and chicken run. Power went out for a couple minutes but that was it.

Our friends in Dundee called last night. Being my husband is on our VFD they know he has his pager. She didn't know what woke them up. They went out to check damage near them and the new silo at the mill was gone she said.
