You've had them in a wire pen with only a rubbermaid container on it's side for shelter day and night?

I tend to take a very low maintenance approach and at six weeks I wouldn't have supplemental heat available for them this time of year, but they would absolutely have access to a good weather-proof coop/shelter with dry bedding, free of drafts and dampness, etc. During the day on nice, warm, sunny days it's not as big a deal. I have been putting not even 1 week old chicks out during the day with no shelter when it's been in the 80s and sunny, but the night and through these damp, rainy spells we've been having they really need shelter that can provide a good, cozy safe haven for them at night at the very least.

I am so tired. Today we got the vinyl down and a couple of other small things done. Seems like it is taking forever to get done. FIL is coming to help tomorrow too. Hopefully i won't be too tired to enjoy chickenstock.

Good Morning. Congrats to the Boyd's on the new baby. And thanks for the welcoming greetings.
Just got in from the barn and have a few minutes so thought I'd say Hey. Hope all have been faring well with all this wet weather. Still cleaning up after that terrible storm last week. Have two buildings down, or almost down. My wood shop and the chicken house. Ah well, good projects for the summer.
The peacocks are hatching out, had nineteen new ones yesterday. We held them back for a later hatch and now glad we did. Actually we were going to try and discourage them from sitting at all but changed our minds at the last moment.
The crazy turkey crowd has decided to have community nests as we also kept them penned up, generally they wander off into the brush and have their nests. This year, due to the coyotes, they are all in the barn, except for the big toms who wander in and out. We've got 4 or 5 hens on several different nests and each has at least twenty eggs! Those girls lay better than the chickens. And such personalities! ha Who'd have thought a grown man would carry on conversations with turkeys? Well, guess this is the place for 'those' kind of people. ;-)
Have a great day and looking forward to see all at the Chickenstock.

if they could so they could sleep in!

IndyBlu- I have never seen peacock babies- are they adorable like chicks?

Sarah

Good Morning Sarah.
Yes, the baby Peacocks are every bit as cute as chicken chicks, just longer legs. Yesterday we had nineteen babies running around. Still have hens on nests. What always makes me smile is to see three or four week old peachicks displaying. The little things fan their little tail, what there is of it, and try to show off. They scramble around trying to keep their balance but usually fall over on their face. Doesn't seem to discourage them as they usually go right back at it....
One thing about peacocks, the hens are terrible moms. When they decide to go someplace they just get up and go... Little chicks sometimes have a hard time keeping up with her and lots of times get lost in the grass or weeds. So we've taken to keeping them in one of the barns till they are big enough to keep up. It's funny to see a hen stand up and all the little legs dangling down. At least till she ruffles her feathers and they all fall off.
Some of them are about a week old and if you are interested I would be more than happy to bring you a couple. Not sure how to keep them warm for the trip.?. We're about two hours from the Chickenstock location. Suggestions?
Jim

So my little robin friend was still hopping aound the yard yesterday. I found a few worms and he opened wide to take them from me. I still think the parent robins are around and I probably shouldn't interfere...... but he's so dang cute! I put him in a tree for the night.

My husband goes out to sit in the coop and talk to the "girls" almost every day!! He didn't even really want them to begin with either. He is now hooked! I think it is so funny! This is definitely the place for that!!

We also made a trip out to Opa's place this week! Sam and Granny are wonderful people! We had a very nice visit! Our 4 year old daughter, Cassie is in love with their place. She got to see baby geese and all of those baby chicks! Yesterday morning I was visiting this group and she saw Opa's avatar and got so excited! "Mom, that is Sam!!!!!" So cute!

Sam, the 2 new girls are adjusting well to their new home! It only took them a few seconds to figure out how to use the nipple waterer that we have. (I was worried about that). They went in at night with the rest and found their spots on the roost too. Yesterday though, they didn't come out of the coop very much, but they were eating and drinking in there, so that is good. I would assume that it takes a few days to get used to the new surroundings and find their place in the group. Thanks again for such a nice visit! Granny is so sweet! I just love her!

FFC, glad the new chicks are fitting in. One reason they didn't have difficulty with the nipple waterer is that what they were using in the tractor. I was great meeting you and Steve and your beautiful daughter. Keep us posted when the new baby arrives.

WARNING Anyone living in the Howell area might want to avoid using Chilson Road later this afternoon. I have the chickenz in the smoker, by then the aroma will be incredible and the people driving by may start drooling which could result in slippery driving conditions.
