I was going to say they are SOOO loud, then I noticed it was you. I guess you have enough room out there the noise wouldn't bother you. Just your neighbors lol

Aric wants them to. I told him just one!

Caprice Acres has guineas- she is who I got the muscovy females from. Shes a great source of knowledge, also. I would suggest contacting her or checking out her website if you are looking for anything specific. Its rather dangerous for me, because I really think my drake needs to go (keyt) and I need a couple more females...and I know where to find some. However, my husband has some strange connection to the over-zealous drake and wouldn't let me give it away.

My experience with guineas is limited to this: LOUD as babies. Get two, not one. As soon as one of the two I had was separated from its partner- it would non-stop cry for its friend. LOUDLY. Neighbors complained, I gave them to my brother in law. One promptly escaped and disappeared. The other would roost in the trees and alert the world whenever someone would pull up in the driveway.
Fantastic insect control.

Growing up, we had guineas all over our yard. I was a teenager, and paid them zero attention. They belonged to the neighbors but knew our yard had all the cool bugs- so they were everywhere. We had five acres, and my dad loved to go hunting for their nests to eat their eggs.

I am sure they taste great, but he also had no way of knowing how long they had been out there, or if they were being incubated. I think I remember talking to him about that once- and he told me he put them in a pan of water first. If they float, something, and if they sunk, something. Again-

On that note, Good Morning everyone. My husband is in Tennessee, and I am taking the kids to a hayride this evening. Tomorrow, I am headed toward Spring Arbor....near Caprice Acres place- as in I have to pass it...just say NO, Kim...to meet my brother and go to the Cider Mill. I need to find a big tarp so I can finish winterizing my duck pen. They are expensive at Home Depot. I remember somewhere seeing a sign that someone sells them. Too bad I cant remember where that was.
Maybe out by you, Brianna? Someone in a lot somewhere...hmmm.

I hope you all have a great day! And if you get eggs, be grateful. I just feed the chickens here and keep them safe. There is no eggs to gather.

As an egg ages the air sac increases in size. To test for freshness place in cold water. If it sinks to the bottom and stays there, it is about three to six days old.
Sinks, but floats at an angle, it's more than a week old. Sinks, but then stands on end, it's about two weeks old. Floats, it's too old and should be discarded.

If you have a surplus store near you, try that for tarps. There is a good one on M-57 just south of Chesaning (Saginaw Co) that has all kinds of inexpensive tarps. I think it is called the M-57 Surplus Store. We used to have the "Goodie Barn" in Flint and it had all kinds of good deals, but sadly went out of business. I once redid my whole kitchen, painted and wallpapered for $25 with Goodie Barn stuff.

In addition to the mom and pop surplus stores check out places like Harbor Freight Tools and American Eagle (the tools, not the clothes) they often have tarps reasonably priced.

There is an "M-57 Surplus" on the West edge of Carson City, too.

We went to the St. Louis Swap this morning "just to look" and thought "maybe, MAYBE if there was a good meaty type rooster I could utilize in the flock I'd pick him up"

Oh, brother.

I came home with 6 muscovey ducks (of various ages and unknown genders), a saddleback sebastapol gander (That I did not need and have no use for! Oy!) and a new project spurred by "big duck" (named by my children) a mix drake whose genetics I'm trying to figure out and whose meat quality I'm excited to try... he's not quite ready for processing yet though, so I'll have to be patient. Now, I'm off to go ask the color gurus a question on big duck... he perplexes me. I want to know how make more of him.

Oh, I probably have been for quite some time. Normally I just hide it behind the guise of them all being for meat quite well. That sebastapol gander has blown my cover though, hasn't he?
