You could put a large stock tank out there with a deicer in it, then you can just scoop water from the tank to fill waterers. You'd only have to fill the tank every so often and could run a hose for that so you don't have to haul so much water.

I've heard that up in the Gaylord to Mackinac area they are getting ...

...snow.
I guess it's not sticking, yet. Weather reports are calling for the same stuff over Halloween.

Weather reports for where? Not here. Please say not here.

My mom was saying even the lower part of the lower pen. is supposed to expect the white fluffy stuff by mid-November this year. I hope she's wrong. Very, very wrong.

A few friends and some family who live up there were complaining on facebook. So from them, the East Jordan/Boyne City/Charlevoix area. One mentioned Petoskey too.
It doesn't surprise me that it's falling as at least a little bit of it has shown up in October before, but it usually doesn't stick until mid November. I'm going to be up there for a haunted house thing my family puts on and I think I will be packing some thermals for under my costume.

I came home from work today and all of my large fowl birds were in their enclosed run rather than being out in the garden. I soon found the reason. That hawk decided to make a return visit and got another bird; a silver ameraucana hen. So now I won't be letting them into the garden anymore. I've started getting the large fowl coop covered for winter and hopefully I can finish tomorrow. I'd like to have the chickens ready for winter and the xmas lights all up before it gets much colder.

We have to put all the hoses up for the winter. There's no room for a tank either or that would be a great idea

Sorry you're going thru this Sam! Was that one of your new ameraucana's? Of the 4 we rec'd from the order, 2 lay green eggs and 2 lay blue eggs....we couldn't be happier! ? for you - we have 7 wk old chicks that are still w/their adopted mom who is really wanting to get back to the main flock... the main flock eats flock raiser 20% protein + free ranging. The chicks receive 18% protein. Would I b setting myself up for issues if we were to move the chicks over to the main flock and they were to finish out on the 20% protein?

thanks!

I would recommend waiting for at least another five weeks before adding the chicks to your main flock. I know some folks have managed to merge young chicks but more have had problems than not.

While it wasn't one of the new birds that was eaten, I'm pretty sure it was the hen that has given me several four ounce eggs. darn hawk seems to know which birds I would miss the most.

Goodmorning all

Stuck working the weekend shift...but I can't complain because I only work the weekend once every 5 wks and the following weekend I get 4 days off to balance my schedule.

Last night we carved pumpkins (oh man up until 1am having a blast!) and now I've got a huge bowl of seeds sitting in water at home waiting to be roasted into pumpkiny yummies! Tonight will be my husband's first night on his permanent schedule at his new job...4pm-1am

makes for a long night alone, ok maybe not completely alone cause I'll have the kids. I'm not sure what I'm going to do once it gets real cold...can't really strap the baby to me in 2ft of snow and freezing temps to go take care of the animals! Guess we'll have to schedule an hour nap in there somewhere and haul the baby monitor around.
Well, off to work! Enjoy the day, it was pretty nice out there this morning!

Bummer! I had so much ambition, I had planned on cleaning out coops, moving around some birds for winter, getting ready for winter, getting their electric all set up, their water bowls, etc. Not as excited to do it in the rain though!

So far it's been clear down here in the SE, so it looks like we'll be able to get the garden put to bed before the State game comes on at noon.

Hey Vicki, any news on the buff ducks? That one egg I got from them was pretty, did they lay anymore yet for your friend?

Yes, they are doing well. They didn't come out of the coop for 2 days, but now happily go in and out and have laid about 3 eggs, so the family is thrilled! They love their kiddie pool and they made them a cozy nest inside the coop, so they are happy little campers.
