So did mine! Lots of grass. I even got to do my chicken chores in PJ's this morning. It's amazing how 45 degrees can be "shorts weather" in January!

That could be scale. Not for sure since I have never had to deal with it yet. I believe you can treat legs with vaseline. I think it is a critter thats crawls under the scales on the chickens legs. Just MHO.

ewwww~~~~!!!! And where did it come from?

Similar to scaly leg mites that canaries and parakeets can get? *sigh*
Vaseline? Does vaseline freeze? I can put it on her legs- I will have to snatch her up off her roost in the dark. Should I soak them? If I am gonna *torture* her by picking her up, I may as well do whatever I can at one time.

Wild birds can carry it.

I've struggled with it a bit.

What I did that really helped. Get some permethrin from TSC or feed store. Dilute according to instructions. Soak bird's feet for several minutes and then slather vaseline on them. Vaseline will not freeze. After birds are treated, put diluted permethrin spray in a bottle and spray perches and bedding. Sprinkle some DE around the run for good measure. Slather vaseline on every few days. Your bird's legs will turn black--but that's just dirt and/or dust sticking to the vaseline. Do not panic.

Good luck. Your birds look like they have it bad.

Permethrin is a plant extract used in fly sprays. It's not exactly toxic but it's not the mildest stuff either. I would treat all your birds to be on the safe side.

What about the Frizzle? Her feet are so darn feathered, I cant even see them. How do i coat them?

No DE around here but I will try the rest. We have ivermectin at work. For cattle. I have Frontline flea spray here for dogs-which is fipronil. What if I spray that on the perches?

Thank you!
And I also found and posted on a scaly mite thread in the emergency/etc thread.

My reply there as well as here:

I brought her inside and soaked her feet in warm water and Aveeno colloidal oatmeal bath. She seemed to relax and I dont think she would have ever moved if I hadnt exhausted my ability to continue to hold her up. Good long soak. And I see how absolutely horrible her feet are. I felt/feel so terrible. I pat-dried them with a towel, sprayed them with dermoplast and then coated them in bag balm.

When i put her back on the perch, I snatched up Frizzle. Her feet are not that bad at all- just a small amount of raised scales but I repeated the process with her. She wasnt nearly as happy to soak her feet but we managed for a few minutes. Dried them off and coated her feet as well.

I am very glad that I did something tonight instead of waiting until tomorrow. I will buy something tomorrow to spread around in the coop or at least to treat the roost that they use to sleep on.

Thanks again.

I could ask the vet on Monday when i go into work. I think what I WILL do with the Frontline is I can use it to spray their roost down. Thank you michickenwrangler and Krisrose.
That poor chickens feet were so bad- and after they softened with the soak, they seemed so painful. I feel so bad for her.

I don't know how to sell, except maybe on ebay. But be really careful not to give out a name or number that can be traced to your address, as there are thieves in the business who might think you have something really valuable there. GET

Hope your hen is on the mend soon, M2M. I've got a chick in the brooder now that I suspect will look a lot like her when it's grown. I waited a little too long before I made the kids say their goodbyes to their pet EE roo and in this last batch I hatched out a couple EE/Australorp crosses. One is black like a BA but has the muffs/beard like the EE -- I'm not sure on comb type now that I think about it, I don't think I looked that closely. The other is blue.

Baby it is cccoooolllllddd outside!! About frooze my buns off opening pop doors and feeding the horse. Should have stayed out longer cause they are still there
