That could be scale. Not for sure since I have never had to deal with it yet. I believe you can treat legs with vaseline. I think it is a critter thats crawls under the scales on the chickens legs. Just MHO.
ewwww~~~~!!!! And where did it come from?
Similar to scaly leg mites that canaries and parakeets can get? *sigh*
Vaseline? Does vaseline freeze? I can put it on her legs- I will have to snatch her up off her roost in the dark. Should I soak them? If I am gonna *torture* her by picking her up, I may as well do whatever I can at one time.
Wild birds can carry it.
I've struggled with it a bit.
What I did that really helped. Get some permethrin from
TSC or feed store. Dilute according to instructions. Soak bird's feet for several minutes and then slather vaseline on them. Vaseline will not freeze. After birds are treated, put diluted permethrin spray in a bottle and spray perches and bedding. Sprinkle some DE around the run for good measure. Slather vaseline on every few days. Your bird's legs will turn black--but that's just dirt and/or dust sticking to the vaseline. Do not panic.
Good luck. Your birds look like they have it bad.
Permethrin is a plant extract used in fly sprays. It's not exactly toxic but it's not the mildest stuff either. I would treat all your birds to be on the safe side.
