Well the problem is the enclosure he's in now isn't that big. If he was in his regular hutch it wouldn't be a problem. Between his water bowl and food bowl there's nothing else. He puts his head in the food bowl but he seems to prefer the water bowl and they're the same thing!

I was thinking of putting him back in his hutch but now I'm not so sure.

Keyt,

Do you need to borrow a bigger cage until spring? That would give him something bigger to live in on the porch until it is warm enough to go back in the condo. Just a thought and totally up to you. If so, give me a hollar. I have a few extras I could spare until spring, then things start filling up around here

Thanks Vicki. Gizmo died in my arms about an hour ago

I have a sick chicken question... she is eating and drinking water but has fluffed feathers and was just sitting on the ground of the run, I did bring her in the house, she has no congestion by her nostrils but sounds like she could be wheezing a little. I have her in a doggy carrier now, her eyes are bright and she is alert just not real energetic.

She has been in for an hour and no stool so could she be eggbound and if so how can I tell for sure, her abdomen is not swollen up.

And how long can I keep her in before I have a hard transition back outside with the other chicks???

Thanks much...

Awww Keyt, I am so sorry to hear about Gizmo.

Cruizer, sorry to hear about your hen. I hope she will be better soon. I don't know what could be wrong with her.

Olive, I was thinking about your countdown today while cleaning the drop boards. To me February always seems like the longest month.

Cruizer... Hope your hen feels better. I'm a newbie to chickens so the only thing I can think of with no symptoms except low energy is have you changed their food? When I mistakenly bought pellets instead of crumbles once I had a hen that only looked like she was eating.

I (& especially the poor hen) was lucky to figure out my mistake before she starved.

Keyt - so sad for your loss.

Thanks to everyone. I've walked out to that porch several times today and hated seeing stuff where the cage used to be. I'm so used to talking to him or letting him out to hug or run around. He was such a good boy!

When I woke up this morning he was laying on his side having a hard time breathing. Having taken care of a lot of rescues, and seeing him slowly fall apart in the last week I knew it wasn't good. I picked him up almost expecting him to squirm but he didn't. I sat in the rocking chair and talked to him while doing his favorite thing...rubbing him on the head! His breathing got slower and more labored and I debated what to do. It didn't take long though and he made the decision for me.

I didn't have him long but he sure had a special place in my heart! Aric buried him where the asparagus patch used to be because he LOVED that stuff!!

Elvis got some special attention today. He's my daughter's rabbit. When we got them it was to give her something to be responsible for because the ducks are mine and the chickens are pretty much Aric's. She's done a much, much better job than either Aric or I ever thought she would! But now poor Elvis doesn't have a buddy to peek through to the other side to so when we get some money I'll get another one. I'm sure it won't be another Gizmo because he was just a perfect little thing!

I just feel so bad. All day I keep thinking back wondering what I did wrong!

Cruizer1 read this see if it helps:

http://msucares.com/poultry/diseases/diseases.html

But we had two chickens that acted like that and we gave them some stuff we got at Family Farm & Home. For the life of me I can't remember what it's called but someone who worked there told me about it. It came in a small packet that we mixed with water. Sorry not much more help than that. It worked though.

Hope you figure it out!
