Hi Michigan!
I haven't been on this site for a few years....and had a nice hello from West Branch < Michigan and she suggested I get on the Michigan thread. Is this it? I'm in north, lower Michigan....Fife Lake to be exact. I have raised various types of hens for the past 7 years....due to Florida trips we usually have to sell them but this time...I think we have a plan to stay put and raise/breed two varieties.
I don't have any at present but they will arrive this spring...already ordered 25.
Let me know if this is the Michigan thread or where to go if it isn't....please.
Happy to be back!

Fifelakelooper (that looper is my take on yooper for the north lower pennisula....hope the "yoopers" are ok with that!

So last night I decided I was done taking care of two coops and threw them all in one coop together. My main grief was that one coop is heated and the other isn't and frozen water is a pain in the butt! My roo's are going to have to rotate staying in a cage in the coop but it's a small sacrifice to not have to haul water to the unheated coop.

While I was putting the other hens in the coop I had the door wide open (it was about 9pm last night and it was dark out) and one of my speckled hens got upset, launched herself over me when I was bending down and flew right out the coop door! I turned around to find her in a snow drift behind me...looked like someone had splatted a chicken into the snow because she was stuck in the drift with her wings spread all the way out to her sides!

I think she was trying to make chicken-snow angels

I walked over and picked her out of the snow and told her what a nutcase she was.

Hi....I've just returned to BYC after a two year break or so! I've posted in a few areas...haven't quite got the hang of how/where to do the postings. Anyway...I'm from downstate Michigan originally around Charlotte....but we moved to north Mi. in 2003. We live in Fife Lake...near Cadillac or Traverse city. Big difference in snow amounts from where I grew up down state! Anyway...we have 20 acres here and my husband has been planting native grasses and wildflowers on about 8 of the acres. The rest is wooded. We have a chicken coop that is at present empty. I sold my last flock a year ago when I went to Florida to care for my 97 year old dad for 3 months. I am now waiting for 25 chicks to arrive in mid April or may....depending on when the breed I ordered comes available. I can't wait!
We have a dog named "Summer" who is good with hens/chicks but loves to go after rabbits and squirrels...she is part Brittany and part beagle. She is a wonderfully sweet girl.
I just wanted to say it is great to be back to reading blogs and posts from other chicken lovers and a big "hello" to the fellow Michiganders....I love our state!
