Its been a while since I have posted, but I'm here reading almost every day. Here is a quick breakdown of the recent events.
My sister called me today, she has a friend at school looking for 10 or so silkies and was wondering if I knew where to find any. My first response was BYC! I told her to look here (Michigan Thread) and the for sale thread. Not sure if she has made to us yet, but if anyone between Lansing and Monroe has a few silkies that are for sale PM me. I work in Melvindale, chickens live in Fowlerville , and my sis works in Gibralter. I am willing to be the "enabler" for her friends chicken needs
Now that the snow has melted like Opa says, its showing all of the clean up I have to do in the yard. Too bad I can't teach the birds to carry the sticks and branches to the burn pile!
TSC strikes again! in addition to the 42 eggs in the bator, and the 20+ birds aging from 1-3 months in the grow out boxes, We now have 4 Peking and 2 rowen(Sp) ducklings. Luckily I have a creek in the back yard and a good line on a free fountain with a pump(about 6 foot by 1.5 foot deep) We'll see what we end up with.
And to top it all off, we might have been "chosen" by a rescue dog at Ingham county. Big baby mastiff mutt is the only way to describe him year or so old and LOVES to have his belly scratched. He stood at the foster Moms house and whine at the door when we left. We are not set up for a dog yet and we are unsure of his reaction to cats and chickens. Aggression to either is a deal breaker, sorry they were here first.
Thats the quick and dirty for us
BTW is anyone going to be at Guyers in Williamston for the swap meet March 27th? We will be there with all of the excess chicks and chickens.
Happy Tuesday, tomorrow is Wednesday and half the week is over
I have tried everything I can to stop the girls from sleeping in the nesting boxes and now I am at a loss and still don't want poopy eggs.
Yes, the roosts are higher than the nesting box. The nesting box sits on the floor and the roosts go higher and five feet. So that is not the issue.
Yes, I kick them all out of the boxes at night and place them on the roosts so they know where to go. I come out the next morning and there they are sleeping in the boxes.
Yes, there is plenty of roost space.
Some of these birds are cochins and silkies, who obviously can't roost that high bc they don't fly as high as the other ladies, so they just slept on the floor but now they've discovered how comfy my nesting boxes are and have decided that thats where they want to sleep at night. IDK what to do.
gallinamama... did you mean you'll probably get your flock NPIP tested? I see you're in Macomb - Macomb Township? If so maybe we can try to coordinate and get a discount since the NPIP tester would only drive out once. PM me if you're interested. I'm thinking late spring when I'm done adding to my flock for the year.

I have my nesting boxes in both of my coops higher than the the roost. The roosting bars are almost like a step going up to the nesting boxes. It seems to work OK.

can you either raise your nest boxes or add some 'sleeping boxes'? Silkies dont roost, so they are thinking the nest boxes are the best place to be
Cricket the only way you can prevent them from sleeping in nest boxes is to find a method to block the opening off at night. I have a drop down curtain the prevents them from entering. It is a hassle to lower it each evening and raise it early each morning but it is the only effective method I've found that works.
Everyone says silkies don't roost. Would you all like to come and see my silkies happily roosting on the top roosts with the big girls? Even the other silkies in the bantam coop roost.
