Funniest thing happened today. One of the turkey hens has made a nest out in the woods a little ways. Everyday I go out after I've done chores and take the egg and bring it up to the house, usually the Schnauzer walks with me and sometimes we go for a walk afterwards. Today chores were taking longer than usual. I was mucking out hog houses and rebedding them. I didn't really notice when the Schnauzer disappeared, she's always on the move out there. Until all of the sudden I see her running up the lane with something in her mouth. Something light tan and roundish. She went and got the turkey egg and brought it to me! Not a crack on it! I was thoroughly impressed with her. Never been much of a small dog fan but this little gal is always doing stuff like this. She may convert me yet.

do we have a chicken vet in se michigan? my easter egger has an eye wound. i've separated her so the others leave her alone, but it isn't healing on its own.

thanks.

cmitcham, when you say an eye injury, is it to the eye itself or to the area adjacent to the eye. I would suggest that you check at a pharmacy for an antibotic ointment specifically for treatment of the eye. At the risk of sounding heartless you may want to just treat the bird yourself and hope for the best rather than taking it to the vet. If the injury is to the eyeball nothing can save the bird's eye but the loss of one eye isn't a tremendous problem. A vet won't be able to do much more than you can yourself and their fee will probably be equal to cost of buying a dozen birds.

thanks for the quick replies!

i am in oxford, but opa is right; i just need to take a good look at it and see about some simple first aid.

incubating gurus! I need your input.
I had the worst hatch ever- in fact, I may never hatch in an incubator again.
Can you shine some light on what went wrong?
I had three dozen eggs. Good people, fertile eggs. banties- lavender ameracaunas and sizzles.

My fertile, growing, developed eggs either didnt hatch, or the ones that did, hatched then died. Mushy babies, and late. They literally hatched then died. ONE and the reason I may never ever ever ever put my self through another attempt- hatched, then had the umbilical cord bleed out. Huge puddle of blood inside the incubator. Baby peeped that distress peep real loud for five minutes then died.
I have one mushy sizzle that I literally removed from the egg. completely. four days late. Never pipped out- but was peeping at an alarming rate inside the egg, then stopped. So, after all the other disaster I figured I had nothing else to lose. This is the only one that lived. Its weak. I dont even know if it will make it but it can walk and peep.More than its siblings did- they literally hatched then died. According to my themometer/hygrometer my temps, etc were right on. However, I know they couldnt have been. So any insight would be a wonderful thing.

AND then, out of nowhere, and completely out of character- my pitbull took to chasing my hen and her chicks...I went out there and grabbed a shovel and chased him out of the chickens yard, and he took off behind the garage- then slunk to the back door. He wouldnt let less than fifty feet be between us. He knew my anger was out of control- and he is darned lucky he wouldnt let me get close enough to him. So, I left my pursuit and went to do a headcount. Momma Hen was throwing a fit. My broody muscovy was off her nest throwing a fit. AND - Well, I couldnt find one of the chicks.
Found it. dead, covered in slobber.
