I ordered 15 assorted chicks from MPC and they ship today, coming from Iowa it says, anyone have experience with how long they might take to get here? I'm sooo worried about them I probably wont sleep till they are here and safe in the brooder.
My post office says they have 2 trucks one at 6 am and the other @ 8 am, that they might be on either one, and they call as soon as they come in.

Good luck with your hen. Sounds like you have done everything possible Daughter of EVe
..

Sun is shining everyone...decent weather finally...I'm still on my "melt snow, melt" mantra.....

Daughter: What you are describing is exactly what has happened to 4+ of our 2.5 - 3 yr old hatchery hens....they've either been RIR or Cinammon (sex-link) - heavy producers; the other scenario that we've encountered again with just these 2 breeds is what I refer to as "wasting" - when the begin to look ill and not acting normal, their weight has decreased substantially and they are about 25% of what their weight should be. No way to note the dropped weight unless we were to hold each one weekly; just don't want you to think that it's neglect on our part because it is not. We have worked with an additiona 4-6 hens who exhibit this downfall. We have used a variety of methods trying to turn them around, never with any success. Have finally decided to simply cull in order to spare us and them the slow death. If anyone has other suggestions, we'd be happy to hear/listen. I really believe it is because they are heavy layers, hatchery hens. Would like to breed our own, and probably will - then we'll have to deal with rehoming roosters!

They must all be here then, I have been seeing a lot of dead ones on the road and have smelled them around here a lot

In that case, you can keep 'em and I'll just celebrate the arrival of spring!

I haven't smelled even one yet! Of course, now that I say that one of my dogs will get sprayed or something... just my luck.

Our dog had skunk spray on her for the second time in the past two weeks! Last time we heard her barking and figured she was after a squirrel ...WRONG. This time she was in the field with DH and he said she was rolling in something...I guess it was skunk spray. A mix of peroxide, baking soda and dish soap works fairly well.....our house probably has a delightful scent inside....have to keep visitors away for awhile.

BAD idea to go to TSC for wood pellets when chicks are half off!!!

Even though the buffs weren't with the banty, they sure take care of it!

The reds and Wyandottes are now 3 weeks old. I had NO idea the reds would grow this fast!

We finally have our first broody hen!! She hasn't moved one inch! I'm curious since this is our first, do we supply her with food and water? She NEVER leaves that I know of unless she does at night. Not sure how many are under her but she won't let anyone near her! Oh that's another question, should I candle them at any point? My sister always did all of this so I don't know and I can't ask her.

Keyt,
My blue cochin went broody last year and she would not get off the nest at all! I was afraid she'd starve herself to death so I would actually put feed in my hand...she would eat then. ..and I would hold up the water to her. After a few days of that..I picked her up and put her down by the food and water and stayed for a while to see if she would go back to the nest. She did...she never stayed off more than maybe 10 minutes but she was a great mama.
