Two of my sons live within 40 miles of Joplin and when Joe first moved there I made several trips to work on his house. At the time if I wanted building materials I would have to go to Joplin. I just saw on the news that both the Home Depot and the Lowes where I shopped are completely gone. Hard to imagine such devastation.

This was before the first storm rolled through...

The one in the middle is the shy roo.

Is there enough detail here to determine sex of these black australorps?

Anyway, the flock weathered the storms of today.

So excited today to announce the additions of six new pullets to our existing chicken family (12 week old 2 RIR, 1 Black Australorp, 1 Black Sex-Link (all hens), and one Black Sex-Link rooster).

Today we visited a local hatchery (can I name it?) and had a great experience, bringing home three more Black Australorps and three more Black Sex-Links. They were born this morning and are SO cute and peepy.

Was thinking about two California Grey Leghorns but I don't know much about them... Anyone have info/ experience on them?

Hoping your Michigan day wasn't too rainy...

Raz,

The Australorps look like the one I have, which the fine folks here have determined to be a hen. Just my rookie opinion, though.

Thanks, Pam.
I certainly hope they are both hens. Of the 3 leghorns, 2 are roos. One has been trying to crow for the last few days. The legs and BAs are about 9 weeks old now. I have 6 more pullets (3 BO and 3 BSL) that are about 4 weeks old. I'm hoping this arrangement works out without having to cull a roo.

LOVE our Australorps. They're quiet, well behaved and fantastic egg layers! Got em from a good 'ol boy just outside of town who had about 75 of them.

The ducklings are just about all dried off. They're having so much fun with each other. One is quite a bit bigger than the other and s/he is definitely the "mother" in that brooder.

Egg sales are through the roof amazing! Today a guy stopped by asking if we dressed out our chickens (not the first time we've been asked). He told him that I said no to it. He said he would pay us triple the going rate if we did because he won't buy it in the store anymore and he grew up on fresh chickens and eggs. Aric and I had this big discussion and planning session. So I guess he's going to use either the basement or kitchen of our house next door. Why not, it only has my whole apartment stored in one room and Angellica's apartment in a room upstairs, we won't be able to live in it lol. He's been doing it since he was 9 and I've seen him do chickens and deer so quickly and perfectly it's amazing! So he's got his thing and I gave in lol.

Now if only my daughter could find a job. I don't see her driving anytime soon so it means we have to drive her wherever she works which means it can't be too far away. That won't happen anytime soon! I wish I could find someone who needed her to do babysitting!

Whew, I'm tired. This first batch of ducklings has had me stressed out! lol

Most times people cull roosters when they have more than one and have no means of keeping them separate. Or the area in which they live does not allow roosters. Unless you intend to hatch eggs and rooster isn't necessary but if you free range a rooster call give a small measure of security to your flock.
