The best way to figure out what is the latest you'd want to have chicks is to subtract 6 weeks from when you will have temperatures below forty degrees in your coop. For my area I wouldn't hestitate to hatch as late as October 1st.

Thanks, Opa!

Well it's back to work today. What a lovely holiday weekend! I hop eeveryone had a good one.

So, last night before putting the girls to bed my DH found another egg! It had quite a bit of blood on it. Could that be a sign that one of my new girls have started laying?

Eeeeore75 I trained in schH for about 6 yrs and loved it. I have two female German Shepherds. The girls are getting a little older. Best thing I could have done, it was enjoyable for me and the dogs.

Sounds like you will conquer! The downside is you can't use their eggs for a while....correct?? I am not sure of how long....

We had a lovely 4th of July here...as I mentioned earlier...Fife Lake has the best 4th in the north!!

We have been very busy over the past week...DH has sold his motorcycle, the row boat and a enclosed trailer. What I forgot to share is that when he sold the trailer...the buyer raises pheasants and quail. They were stuck in their negotiations on price and settled for the final $50 to be in BOB WHITE QUAIL!!
So we now have a flock of quail.....they make such lovely cooing sounds and are so cute. The owner said they were ready to be released but we are waiting for another week. We don't hear the "bob white" call like I did as a kid in Eaton County growing up. They probably won't survive but we will give it a shot.....hoping they can avoid the bobcats, coyotes and other varmits and the long cold winters.

Okay you are around Lansing, I believe. I am more south, I work in the Hillsdale and Milan. Now that they a little older I have them help me with the chickens, round them up at night. Very nice picture of the Doberman.

What does your dog do?? I have one in training for SchH- so I'm just curious.

Have obedience titles on her atm, herding ,we've done some agility. Love Shutzhund training , French ring is really cool but not very popular in the US. Only had 1 I started ShcH with, lost him 2 years ago.
I have Bouvier Des Flandres. They quickly get bored with training, lol.

Another point that a friend of mine found to be a point of reinfection with mites was her compost pile. The mite eggs would hatch out on the compost pile and then any bird or critter that visits the compost pile and lands or runs through the chicken yard would reinfest. So if you compost, you might consider treating the compost pile as well. For what it's worth.

Great point! I was going to throw the used pine shavings in the woods but I guess I should bag them up and put them out for the trash pickup. I don't have a compost pile. Thanks!

I'm praying I get rid of the mites! My chickens are not laying yet, but I read that I can still eat the eggs because Ivermectin is also used in people to treat something called River Blindness with great success. By the time they start laying, hopefully another several weeks, I won't be worried about the eggs anyway.
