8 weeks this weekend. We were over there last week and they all seemed very content to be held.

I felt so bad putting my chickens in the coop tonight. It is so stinking hot! I put an frozen jug of water in there with them in hopes it adds some relief. The big girls sleep on the roosts where the windows are but the little ones are on the floor of the coop in a sectioned off part so even if there is some breeze, they won't feel it. It says it's 86 now at 9:30 at night. Yuck!

My daughter and I are going on a camping retreat this weekend. I am not looking forward to sleeping in a cabin in this weather. I'm bringing a fan and keeping my fingers crossed that there will be electricity in our cabin.

I'm spoiled with central air and a ceiling fan in my bedroom.

I am so thankful that my coop stays liveable for them, probably due to the insulation. I keep two fans blowing air into the coop from the windows 24/7 which also helps. Not to say it isn't warm, it was 82 when I closed the door on them tonight, but the fans are pointed up toward the roosts and the moving air keeps them from panting too much.

Thanks to all the rain dancers (Opa, did you shave your legs and help them out?) it finally rained here, but not long enough. Please keep trying, we need more!!

I decided to do my rain dance yesterday. It was so hot after weeding in the garden, I was so dirty and the hose water was so warm, well I decided the backyard was the perfect place for a shower. Nice to see it worked as a little rain storm came through last night. For tonight, I went ahead and tempted fate by watering the garden. That will surely bring more rain.

Picked another 3 quarts of black raspberries tonight and was nearly carried off by all the skeeters. Then for kicks I tossed a couple of hand fulls of berries into the middle of all the chickens. They dove at them with abandoned vigor and in an instant they were gone. What fun.

Does anyone have or know anyone who has any Australorp pullets or hens available? I want to keep my mom & stepdad, sister's family of 4, and my family of 4 from having to buy grocery store eggs. My Isas are laying now but I'm going to need 3 dozen a week. And I really want australorps without the risk of getting a rooster. I saw that some people had them at chickenstock but they were all too young to even guess on their sex. I'm pretty sure my neighbors have no idea I have 6 chickens and 2 ducks and I'd like to keep it that way!

Can you move your coop into the shade? My coop is under a large tree and if I keep the window and door open in the evening, I can get it cooled out by sunset. Tonight it was 82 degrees when I closed the coop. I set a waterer next to Bobbi on the shelf where she could reach it and I set a large frozen jug of water next to her also.

I am giving lots of fresh water in the day and lots of shade. I am also restricting her movements a bit, keeping her in a 4x6 area under the tree. Bobbi would run all over the yard after us and it is just too hot to allow her to do that!

Woah!

Speaking of which...now I worry about our 3 rabbits. We have no place to put them other than their hutches in the barn and every day they're let out in the dog run for a few hours. The dog run is fenced in, shaded under trees and the top is covered with a tarp. We check on their water every hour like we do everyone else's and offer them frozen but partially defrosted fruit. Will they be ok?

Don't give yourself heatstroke doing all that! Be careful.
It is crazy hot outside.
I have kept the hose going on MIST for two days now- and the pool is full for the geese. I have a crazy frizzle that is broody in the coop- probably dead. I will check on her again today. This is the fourth time she has gone broody- and I let her raise up babies once this year already. Her eggs arent fertile. The other chickens refuse to sleep in the coop. The silkies think it is the slaughterhouse. It is hot in there, but I have the windows open.
No breeze so it doesnt help.

I took the little chicks outside last night. I dont have air conditioning, so my house is a sauna. Last night before dark, it was comfortable out. I took the four chicks- little Shmoo (thanks Jen!) and the two turkens from Farmerboy and the little black silkiesomething from keyt.
And I made some observations.
One turken has most of its feathers- including tail feathers. One doesnt have shoulder? feathers and no tail feathers. The black one from Keyt- feathered and tail feathers. Little Shmoo? Just wing feathers.
Me thinks that Farmerboys girls had their own mindset- I am thinking one is a cockerel. Little things chest bumping...Same with Keyts' little black one. Cockerel?
Which one grows their feathers in first? The boys, right?
If so, I will have a turken and a little something that need new homes. No crowing- though you probably cant hear it over the screeechonks of the geese. I think my neighbors dont know what that sound is- probably think I have donkeys. lol
However, they will know what crowing is.

I have to work this morning. At least I get A/C at work. None in the vehicle.

Yesterdays storm wimped out- it went through too fast, dumped some water, made steam and kept on going.

I think its the girls who get the first feather growth.
We got just enough rain to steam it up and knock the dust back. I work a bit south of my home and it poured there!
