For those of you who are sure if today is going to be a good day I thought I would share the method that I have found to be extremely accurate in determing how the day is going to turn out. Turn your left arm so that the palm faces upward. With your right hand place your first and second fingers on your left wrist just above the base of your thumb. Now press slightly downward. Your should detect a pulse. If you do you have discovered the primary requirement to having a good day. The first morning that I don't have one will probably indicate that I will no longer be answering anyone's questions.

Chickmate, I have used a cat litter shovel and by shaking it side to side you can remove some of the droppings. However, I finally gave up and accepted the fact that the litter will become fouled by the fowl. I just let it accumulate and do a total cleanout every two months. Having dropping board that catch the night waste and cleaning those weekly seems to be quite manageable.

Chickenhobby1, welcome to BYC and the Michigan thread. I'm sure you will enjoy being here. As you spend more time on BYC I'm sure you will discover that the Michigan thread is populated by the nicest people on the entire site and the size of our thread attests to that fact. I don't know how far you would be willing to drive but I have Welsummers if you want a nice dark colored egg.

chickenhobby1! Hope you stay awhile and visit. There's lots of folks here with fertile eggs. They'll soon be offering eggs to you, as soon as they wake up.
To clean out the coop in between the major clean ups, I use a dust pan and old spatula and just pick up the poops. It's easy and fast.

How is everybody's Wednesday so far? My company's management is still trying very hard to run the place into the ground but I guess I am still able to expect a paycheck on Friday...if all goes well. Sure wish it was Friday already. This is what I will look forward too

I am no expert, but I find that if I sprinkle DE on the coop floor, it will dry the poop out fast between cleanings. I had planned on doing the deep litter method, but I find myself needing to clean it out about every 4-6 weeks. Maybe in the winter I will let it go longer. I think DE really helps though.

I added Sweet PDZ (and DE) this week and it's really helped keep my coop dry and the flies at bay. I've been cleaning out the coop every 3-4 weeks but I may have a lower toleration threshold. Once I can smell the coop (and I've already cleaned out the poop tray)...it must be cleaned.

My DH is going to remove the upper nesting boxes for me becuase the girls like to roost up there, causing me to clean all the time (it gets smelly and icky). They don't even use those nexting boxes anymore. They all prefer to lay their eggs in the comfy, colorful Target milk crates nesting boxes I created.

MY CHICKENS ARE SQUATTING!!! I went to do my morning chat with the freeloaders, started giving a few some back scratches and they squatted down and stuck there butts in the air, barred rocks did the rest didn't. When i get my first egg I am bronzing it like a trophy. My husband says it will be the 100 dollar egg..LOL.

I have a stupid question. I have 9 hens and 2 roos, right? I'm sure they'll be doing their job with all the laides, so what Im wondering is if a hen lays an egg that's HAS been fertilized and I gather it for the fridge, will I be seeing anything funny looking if I fry it in a day or two? There won't be blood vessels and stuff going on will there?
