Hello Fellow Michiganders, it is great to hear what is going on here. I learned everything from this site and look forward to catching up with you.

It chased you? Be careful, several areas have been seeing an increase in rabid skunks.

Ok, I can take a hint. I will be getting an incubator for Christmas so no more waiting for a broody hen. I still have not had a hen go broody for me this year. DH is going to close off part of a shed for another breeder pen.

OMG, i wish I didn't have any broodies. All of my bantams have been sitting on nothing for 2 weeks. They will take eggs and sit on them til we go get them, then we have to put a bowl over their heads while we gather them. I'd leave them but no one is laying that much and despite having a huge cover over our eggs for sale sign, we still have regular customers stopping so I need all the eggs I can get!! Yesterday one lady who comes by every other week stopped despite the cover on the sign. She said she purposely didn't buy eggs at the store because she was going to stop here. When i told her I didn't have her usual 4 dozen (NO idea what she does with that many every other week!!) she was really bummed. I had enough for one dozen plus all the bantam eggs. She asked if I had checked that day so I went out there, moved the broodies (she got a kick out of that!), got the eggs and put them in a carton. I sold her the bantam eggs for $2 (there were about 2 doz) and she was happily on her way. But before i left I told her to call me first.

Oh speaking of which, I got a kick out of something Thurs. We went to Sav a Lot and ran into one of our regulars. He always comes by on a moped and buys 3 dozen duck eggs because it's all he and his daughter will eat. He says "Hey, any eggs?" and I said no. He says "darn, well I'll keep checking! Do you plan on getting anymore ducks to have more eggs?". HAHA NO. It's hard to believe in April I was worried I wouldn't have any customers, now I run into them at the store!

If you see it again I would shoot first and ask questions later. Skunks, as with most small wild animals, are not usually aggressive without being provoked. Corner it? Yes, it should attack. Threaten its offspring? Sure, it should get confrontational with you. Just happen to come across it in the yard? Not so much. If it doesn't even try to retreat something is probably up. Skunks are generally second only to bats in testing positive for rabies in Michigan each year. Be careful!

Who here has the pet tortoise? Is it M2EM? I may or may not have gotten myself suckered into telling the kids they might be able to get a pet turtle and have some questions... questions that I could answer by googling, yes, I'm sure. But what fun is that?

I want one too!!! But we've run out of room for more animals. We're already looking for a male pot belly pig. I think Aric just wants to borrow one for my female lol. I already need to come up with supplies to build another run for the Jersey Giant, Gandalf we got at chickenstock but can't afford it right now. He loves hanging out in the dog run during the day with his lady, but I want him to have his own run. I LOVE Gandalf. Never knew a rooster would like to cuddle!! lol

Oh by the way....

I did it again. Another morning that I'm still counted among the living so it's going to be a good day. Sunrise is at 626 so time to get up folks, the day is awaiting you. Make it a good one.

Yesterday my neighbor and I started working up about 1 acre of land behind my house. Hopefully we will get in all done today and then I will seed it with ladino clover and brassica. Both turkeys and deer will benefit and hopefully we will too.

Another day or two and I will start picking and canning green beans. The recent rain certainly was a bonus. It doesn't matter how much you water it still doesn't seem as affective as a good rain. I need to pull the lettuce that has bolted and feed it to the chickens and then work up the section of the garden that held lettuce and radishes. I will wait a couple of more weeks and then replant for a fall crop.

I may have a few Vorwerk chick hatching in a couple of weeks if anyone is interested. I currently have 2 hens sitting on eggs. I didn't particularily want more but I got tired of fighting their broodiness.

It was late at night, I ran in the house and got the shotgun, wich is probably over kill for a skunk, but by the time I ran back out I couldn't find it , and the smell was making me gag, live traps set this morning baited with wet cat food and peanut butter, we will see what shows up, if it was rabid that is scarey, I'll be sure to call the health dept if I catch it.
Theres a explosion of racoons in the area to, we've seen a Moma coon and all her babies out in middle of the day witch imo is pretty weird behavior.
