oh my goodness gracious, my 7yr old came running, all in a tizzy...telling me that two of the chickens were fighting and one was winning and was jumping on the back o f the other chicken and biting the back of its head. She was sooo distraught...and then when I gave a little chuckle and didnt come running to break up the "fight" she got all mad at me...I just had to share, it was quite comical to say the least.

My almost 21 yr old daughter is new to this farm life thing. Earlier this Spring she saw some of our ducks doing the same thing. She didn't say anything until after the drake got up to walk away. She yelled for me and said "Opie had a huge curly worm hanging out of his butt" LOL. If that wasn't enough, a few weeks later our 60-some year old neighbor Tom said the same thing! LOL

Ahhh, he's too young for me to know but a what a small world it is, Keyt.

You can send your kids over here. Mine will indoctrinate them. My kids are the ones who were at the window laughing their butts off during a rain storm and then yelled "Hey MOM! Look! The ducks are doin' it on the slip 'n slide."

I take it you live there? I miss it there so much. My son went to live with some friends (Patty and Doug Pringle. Their son was the football coach) because he couldn't hack it here at the bigger schools. He did so much better there! I would go there every weekend when he had sporting events. He was in football, baseball and wrestling. I was usually one of the loudest ones in the stands LOL.

I miss the lake and the small little restaurant and ice cream shop in Crystal!

Yep, in the area, anyway. The Pringles are good people. And CCC has a decent wrestling program, though it's nothing compared to what it once was.

I agree, the Pringles are good people. They more or less turned my son's life around...til he moved out. When Chance was wrestling, his junior year they made it to states, but lost by a handful of points. His senior year, having lost all the good guys the year before, they didn't do anything remarkable and last I knew, they haven't since. He was coaching flag football for a team in Lansing, but now he's back to living in Sheridan with his girlfriend of almost 6 yrs who went to Central Montcalm. I had a cabin on a private lake in Sheridan for years so I miss it there too!

So, I've resorted to trying every trick I can think of to re-home these roosters and drakes. I guess it won't be happening this year which means I may have to do the one thing I was totally trying to avoid. I have hens with loads of missing feathers and combs thanks to the roosters, and drakes who tag team my female ducks. There are too many birds in the duck runs, but that's because I have too many roosters so I've had to separate them all into various places, including the duck run. Everyone is fine as long as they're in the yard because they can spread out.

I'm kinda angry now. This past Spring Aric wanted to get some chicks...fine...we needed them! But I told him to get pullets and he wanted others because they were what has worked best for us. What did that mean? Taking a risk that too many would be roosters which is a problem for a lot of people. Then he just had to have Gandalf, fine, I love him a bunch and he's not even on the list of roosters that cause problems. Now we have this other rooster, the BSL that came with the hens we needed. UGH.

I stood up and made my decision despite it being very unpopular and worked on re-homing the ones who were on the list to get rid of. But it's the wrong time of year and no one wants roosters or drakes, not even when I offer females to go with them. Grrr.

With winter coming up, I'm afraid they will spend more time inside (chickens at least) which will lead all these roosters to picking on everyone more. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm so mad at these roosters I'm ready to cull them (and I swore I'd NEVER say that!), but Aric is the rooster fan so he wouldn't do it. It was too much for him to agree to let them go! Another frustrating thing is he works with the chickens, I work with the ducks. Yet I'm the one who has to do the re-arranging of birds, break up bad fights, bandage up injured birds, etc.

I love Aric to pieces, but his rooster collecting has got to stop! Oh and the other day when I said I had 6, I actually have 10 adults!!!
