Oh Im so sorry. Don't you wish you could strangle some dog owners sometimes. I have one who has a FENCED BACK YARD but continues to just open the door and let her 2 black labs out to run at night. They end up around here, setting off all my terriers in the house, then move on down to the next home and their Brittney's go off. I fear I would not remain a very nice neighbor if/when they find a way into my fenced yard and coop and destroy any of my chickens.

Very sorry for your terrible loss.

ChickwannaB to email the Milford village in regards to the 93 yr. old man...go to your own mailbox (not on BYC) and click on "create mail". Then enter as the address: milfordvillage@villageof milford.org
and then you can blast them with the harshness they deserve.

For the next one pertaining to MalissaB" do the same as above but the email address is: [email protected]

I bought a bag of layer crumble the other day for my girls who are 18/19 weeks old. I am finishing out the chick feed that is on hand and mixing the layer with it. I also got some oyster shell as well. I threw out a couple of handfuls of shell yesterday and it is all gone today.

I'm not sure what to look for as they mature to egg laying stage. The comb on 1 BSL is getting a darker red, the others and the BOs are still pink. I've found a couple of holes in the raspberry patch that could be nests or just dusting bowls. None of them seem interested in the nest boxes that I have for them.

Maybe I'm just getting anxious for that first egg...

Wow, that's awful! We have been lucky not to have anything go after our birds. They're runs are surrounded by trees, barn and a house, but that doesn't mean something on four legs couldn't get in there. I don't know how I'd react! Hopefully you get whatever it was!!!

It's hard not to get anxious while waiting for your first birds to lay. A darkening of their comb and wattles is one good indicator and often birds that are approaching maturity will start squatting in your presence. Some refer to this as the egg squat, body lowered, the point of the humerus will be pointed outward. This is a submissive posture rarely exhibited much prior to onset of lay. This posture also makes it difficult to walk in your run without the risk of stepping on a bird. The bowls in the raspberries are most likely dust bowls but I would continue to check them for eggs. If you have dummy eggs in your nest boxes about all you can do at this point is wait.

GOOOD NEWSSS!!!!!

I took dianaross' advice and posted another ad with the words "I don't care if you want to eat these roosters, I just don't wanna know!" and this morning a guy who lives down the road from us called and said he wants ALL 3 ROOSTERS!!!!! Thing is, he has chickens so he probably isn't taking them to eat them!! At this point I don't care, I just want them GONE!!! Aric is attached to one of them, but he's one of two that do nothing but crow all day long and have for 8 months!!!

The best part is now Gandalf can be in one of the runs!!! Well, at least I hope. Poor thing has been in the breeding pen part of the day and the dog run the other part. He likes being carried so taking him back and forth isn't a problem (well, he's too heavy for me!) but it will be nice to have him be out all day!!

NO MORE TROUBLEMAKING ROOSTERS WOOHOOO!!!!!!!

MrsChickendad, so sorry to hear of your flock loss. Like Opa, I have can help you out if you need. I have a neighbor who is looking to get rid of an Americana(SP?) pair. I do believe she is laying right now too. Also am I am picking up a trio of salmon faverolles Monday that are laying, am going to let the ladies sit their eggs, because I really want faverolles, but I'd be willing to share.

If I lived in a town, village, area that didn't allow coops, I would have indoor chickens. Not kidding. I'd have a bunch of indoor chickens wearing diapers, because now that I have chickens, I love them little buggers! If I didn't have tv or radio or books, I wouldn't be bored, I'd just go watch the chickens.

Im with you Nova...found out I have 3 roos in my Chantecler bunch now instead of the 2. Gladly give one or two to someone who needs to replace. Let me know. They are just over 16 weeks so will probably soon be able to do the deed.

Oh and I DID just send my letter to milford village city council.
