M.sue :

That is fantastic that she likes to bake and at 10 yet! My 10 yr. old likes to help prepare everything out but prefers that I put the goods in the oven instead of herself. She is afraid she'll burn herself. I tell her practice makes perfect!!

It certainly does! My daughter has been baking by herself for 2 or 3 years now. She tends to be mature for her age though. My younger daughter is almost 7 now and no where near ready to handle things around the oven or stove yet. Every kid is different.

One thing that helped my oldest daughter gain confidence was gloves. When she started showing interest in doing it herself we got her big heat proof gloves. She could reach in and out and there was no exposed skin or clothing for her to be able to burn herself. She used those until she gained the confidence and finesse to handle things with just hot pads and she still sometimes use the gloves instead. Maybe that would help your daughter.

Araucanas are indeed rumpless and tufted with no muffs or beards (at least in the U.S., UK standards call for the Araucana being quite like our Ameraucana)

Here is an example of a young male of mine named Abe (he looks a lot different now, only a couple months later). You can see his tufts and lack of tail (a rumpless bird literally is missing the coccyx or tailbone, along with the oil gland normally present).

Thought so Stacykins although I noted I spelled it wrong. I have been "lurking" on the Ameracauna thread...considering adding 2 or 3 to my flock next spring. Trouble is I only have 1 Brinsea incubator and want to hatch some of my jersey giants, English Orps and now if I add Ameracuana....will be hatching all summer again. I also read that the Araucanas carry some kind of deadly gene that makes hatching them tricky. Soooooo...although they are neat looking...want to stick with "easier" to hatch. If I knew someone local who had vaccinated Ameracauna's..(5 months) I'd rather go that route but after reading all the horror stories on BYC regarding Marek's I have decided to never bring in a chicken of any age unless it has been vaccinated.

Not liking this cold, windy day. So I stayed indoors and did homework all morning, a treatis on Asclepias in Michigan.
Anyway, I took a break and checked on the chickens. They have a few windbreaks to hang out in, not counting the tent garage where the food and water are. I filled the water and feed bowls, then looked at the thermometer. It is 7 degrees warmer than the ambient air. Not too shabby for a cheapo tent.

Anybody on the west side looking for Silkie chicks. GR CL farm and garden section has an ad for FREE Silkie chicks. They were hatched as a school project but their neighborhood assoc. does not allow them to keep them They are in Rockford.

Well today wasn't a good day of fishing but it still was better than a day of working. Water temperatures were still much too warm and it was extremely windy. Still it was nice to get out on the river and let a little of the funk get blown off. My friend is going to keep checking the river and as soon as he starts seeing some fish we'll try it again.

The gene for tufting is a lethal one if the chick is homozygous (gets two copies of the tufted gene from each parent) for it. It is a dominant gene too. Breeders overcome the issue by breeding so one parent is tufted the other cleanfaced. That results in 50% tufted chicks and 50% cleanfaced chicks, rather than 50% tufted, 25% cleanfaced, and 25% dead in shell.

Araucana eggs just seem more delicate than others, shipping is rougher on them even with the best packing job possible. They are harder to hatch in general, so tossing in that lethal gene makes it more difficult. I was lucky and had stellar hatches.

Raz, how much did that tent garage set you back? I am definitely gonna need something like that to store hay in and whatnot next year.
