Yikes! So I'm some sort of a poultry pervert?
sickbyc.gif

Since they were wee chicks, they have been handled regularly, petted on their backs and crops. I've done the same with my dogs and cats. I figure that if they are used to being handled then any problems that arise that require a physical exam will be less stressful to the animal.

Well.... kind of.... yes.

I don't think your a perv. I do it to mine too but mostly just to continue to assert myself as the rooster. I think it's a waste not to take advantage of their submission. I think it's really important to have hens that are easily handled. I have 2 female ducks that act like I'm an axe murderer and let me tell you that catching them to clip their wings is stressful for them because they aren't used to being handled. So, I'll stick to being a creep with the hens because it can't hurt.

Seems like an awfully big assumption to be making with zero hard evidence.

Maybe you are right Olive. I am a "jumper". They are happily pecking away right now so I will continue to try to find something concrete. I emailed NPIP a week ago and asked who tested up here but never heard back. I will call State info and see if I can find out more. I just have read that "sneezing" is not a cold with chickens. They don't have colds. Mine spread so I cannot think of anything that gives me a "happier" out look but I will sure try so I can inform you all . Always good to get input from my friends on BYC.

I will be Awol for a bit since my computer is in the shop. I had to stop by the library for my BYC fix

I hate to see how many pages I will be behind the next time I get on here.

YEAH! God is good! A friend emailed me a list of Avian Vets!
I cannot transfer it onto BYC but for Fife I can give you two that may be able to help you. Although if you decide to cull this flock and start over in the Spring, I don't think there is anything wrong with that. You could also give them to a family who would agree not to breed or sell them, just to use them for eggs.
Here are the two vets on the list that may be close to you;

Marianne Jassens DVM
Grand Traverse Vet Hospital
3805 Vetran's Drive
T.C. MI 49686
231-946-3770

and

James Scott DVM
Riverbend Animal Hospital
10565 Northland Drive
Big Rapids, MI 49307
231-796-3507

Also for Soctippy
here is a vet clinic with two avian vets East of Lansing.
Dr. Beasley and Dr. Nolan
Cedar Creek Vet Clinic
2295 Williamston Rd.
Willimaston, MI 48895
517-655-4906

If anyone wants me to post the vets from holland, grand haven, portage, fruitport - just send me a message.
I don't think that you have to treat a chicken. I think humanely keeping them and then killing and eating them is o.k. But it is nice to have options. Especially when you are talking about a whole flock of younger birds or a special pet. Good luck and God bless!
