My dependable-been-laying-an-egg-a-day since June ISA laid the whopper on the left yesterday and the itty bitty thing today. What gives?

Hi everyone!
I spent the weekend cleaning the yard, and preparing for the impending snow. I hate winter. I have pretty much buried my coop with straw bales. I need about six more to make me happy. I have stacked it three quarters high on two sides to block the wind. I need some for my little covered lean-to. I have a few stacked against one side, need to put some on the other-side. I strung Christmas lights inside, to give us some light when its the middle of the day but feeling like night. I am really trying to muffle my little rooster until Spring. I was at my brother-in-laws house, and I just cant take him over there.

His three big rooster (One JG, one Maran, one who knows) would kill him in a minute.They have huge spurs, and battle scars. Theres only about six hens- and I just cant do it. Soooo, I think if we can wait until Spring, one of y'all will be itchin for a turken. So, we are waiting it out.

We raked and raked and raked up all the leaves and bagged them...and then went to my grandsons third birthday party. Had a nice time.

I hope you are all doing well. I got a promotion at work, and am now the VA supervisor and the technician supervisor. Overseeing two departments does not leave me much time. PLUS...I have been driving with my teen girl...Tiffany.

I really am too old to be sitting in the passenger seat whilst giving constructive criticism and trying to stay alive.

Three down, two to go. IF this one doesnt kill me, the next one might.

I hate how it gets dark so early. How many days until Spring? I think I need to put up special lighting inside our house so that I can combat any sad stuff that comes along with darkness.

Well I was outside a little while ago, chickens free ranging, kids riding the quads and the dog was out. When I was out by the shed I thought I heard a hawk screeching. I went inside, grab binoculars, scanned the area & didn't see anything. I KNEW what I heard so I was on the watch. Sure enough a little while later there he is scoping out the scene. I hurried & got the flock into the run. As I was rushing and getting the flock to follow me my little Roo decides I'm a threat or something and decides he's gonna challenge me & charge at me. Not once but several times. BIG DISLIKE...

....so I swatted him with a stick a couple of time! Little bugger is getting testy from time to time. Once they were all in the run I gave them a watermelon and stalked that little guy, marching, stomping and

telling him he doesn't want me to get my hands on him. I didn't think I was gonna have to much of a problem with him but I think I'm gonna have to go in there, get a firm hold, and hold him down. He needs to know he can't do that to me or anyone.

M.sue, I have a roo just like yours. He's been challenging me for quite some time now and I don't foresee him stopping anytime soon. I've done the hold thing, too, and it didn't seem to shake him. He's just so full of his little self. In fact, today when my big girls were out, I had to constantly shoo him away because he was trying to fight them. Eventually, I think his days will be numbered because he just has so much attitude.​

In lieu of extra straw bales, use your bagged leaves, they will work about the same except as they decompose over winter, the bags will collapse some. (I'm assuming that you used the brown paper leaf bags) Or if you don't want your leaves, give me a call. I never have enough leaves.

He's real good with the girls. Not a problem there at all in fact he's sort of a gentleman...... protective,waits for them to exit to coop, sometimes waits till they eat a little first, doesn't chase or pester them if you know what I mean. If one has nothing to with him he mossies around and seeks someone willing. At dusk he rounds them up near the coop. I've been reading a thread on here that offers several different techniques to try before we send him to freezer camp. That I don't want to do....we just got him this spring and I love waking to the morning crow and hearing it through the day. I will try several things and make many attempts to correct this but if all fails I will be very, very, sad. He's a Roo, we don't coddle him, we let him be himself & do his own thing.... But dang I don't like having to have my guard up.

Would anyone like a couple of free roos. I have 4 and eleven hens (bantams) so I need to get rid of a couple. The father is a lavender orpington and the mothers are a seabright and mille fleur. They were hatched in May. It was so much fun watching the mothers raise them, much different than when we raised them last year from chicks from TSC.

They'll be really hard to find if you are looking for them to buy asap. Turkeys are seasonal layers, laying in the fall and early summer (usually). I read of an odd ball on the turkey subforum that just laid a clutch, but that is really unusual.

I personally got mine as hatching eggs earlier in the year. Just butchered two at 22 weeks ( a tad young for heritage birds like they are) but the carcasses have a nice load of meat on them.

My roo was fighting our big girls only. He's not usually around them. He has his own little troupe that he does fine with. As for hearing the morning crow, I have a 6 man crew.
