RaZ that is a wonderful thing - to have plenty of eggs! Carry that basket with pride!

I had to correct my post and I am praying for CINDY who lost everything in a fire. I will sincerely pray for her.

Fife and Bobbry - I called my vet yesterday and asked more questions about my older hen's pneumonia. He assured me that it was not MG or MS or Aspergillosis.
He said it was a simple bacterial pneumonia brought on by the weather change and cured by amoxicillian and a heat lamp. It did not spread to my two 7 week old Isa Browns and it will not be contagious to our pet sitter's flock if we travel this Xmas.

I asked about my dusty coop and the hen's occasional sneezes and he said that the pine shavings I am using are fine and occasional sneezing from dust or weather change are normal.
He did advise me to call him if a chicken develops any diarrhea, nasal or eye discharge or if the breathing is labored or the chicken makes a sound when it breathes.
Or if the chickens are lethargic, fluffy or not eating.

I hope that helps as we decide when to treat and when to cull and when to call the vet.

My son has pneumonia. He doesn't go near the chickens so he must have caught it at high school! Now my son is taking Amoxicillan and using a heating pad (his own form of heat lamp).

Speaking of hawks, this guy was sitting on my gate one day last summer, before I got my chickens. He sat there for quite a while, then jumped down to the ground looking for mice, then took off. I just happened to walk into the guest bedroom and see him through the window. Got my camera and was able to get some pretty good pictures of him. I'm not sure what kind it was and he seemed pretty big to me, but I've never seen one that close up before, either. He doesn't appear to have much of a red tail, so maybe a Cooper's?

I've seen those huge hawks in NE and MO, where I'm from, Olive. They are monsters!

I'm also praying for Cindy. I can't imagine losing my home and pets.

Welcome fuzzybut and anyone else new! This is a great thread with lots of nice people and good advice.

Having eggs to sell is great! My best customer is stopping by this afternoon for 6 dozen.

I've been trying to get some advice over on the Flock Management thread, but not getting much help so far. Maybe it's just one of those situations that I'll have to wait and figure out for myself. Here's the link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=597836 if anyone has thoughts or experience with it.

Thanks chicken grandma. I wish/hope that is the case with mine. However...My two roos (both were sneezers) do wheeze at times. I noticed it today when the one roo was chasing the other one. (and that is after 7 days on tetracyline and 4 additional on Denagard.) No fluffiness...no non eating...no eye symptoms. I will post results as soon as MSU gives the answers.

My poor little Silkies! I am integrating them right now, and let them out of the cage (currently in the coop) I stayed outside, and talked on the phone. They came of the cage, and all was fine for a little while. Then I heard a ton of squawking. My teeny tiny silkie (she is extra small, at around 16 weeks) was being picked on by my huge brahma. My sister in law, who I was talking too, could even hear it on the phone! So, I rescued her and put her back in the cage. Then when the other one started getting chased, I put her back in too. So, I am going to wait a couple more days. But, they are at least in the coop where they can be seen, but not hurt.

My hubby is hunting. I am going this weekend, with him, my daughter and our "4th daughter" She is a friend's daughter, but she is like our own. I would rather be bow hunting, but only got out once during bow season.

This is the new silkie, her name is Nevermore. Not the best pic. It was taken with my phone and she wouldn't hold still

Thanks for the prayers for Cindy. Each day will surely get a little easier. All wounds of the heart heal and stuff can be replaced.

My injured roo is walking wonderfully today, my DD helped me work out a splint and wrap of sorts last night to support his toe and he is running around the yard with Glee today. (can they do that?) Any way, I will be keeping an eye on it vigantly just in case it is really bumblefoot(thanks for the reminder Fife). I really don't want to have to operate.

Best wishes for hunters everywhere. Safety first guys. My DH got one for bow season and we love having the meat in the freezer.

AngelaB - good luck with the integration of the Silkies. It is tough to be at the bottom of the order. At least they have each other.

AngelaB, when I integrated my silkies I gave them a place to hide from the big girls. It should be pretty easy since they are so much smaller. I used a plastic tote flipped upside-down in the run. I cut a "mouse hole" in it on one end just big enough for the silkies to fit. Since the hole was in the end, even if the big girls stuck their heads in, they couldn't reach the silkies. I put the silkies inside the bin so they could decide when they wanted to venture out and could find it again. Also make sure to have more than one feeder and waterer for the flock. The big girls will keep the silkies away from them for a while. It was a very noisy integration but it always sounded worse than it was. Good luck, they sure are cute little buggers!

Angela, I would keep them separated for a couple of weeks. They need to be seen by the others but kept safe in their own area. There is such a size difference, your silkies can really be hurt by them. My neighbor got silkies and had them separated, but didn't think a chicken would actually jump over the fence. Poor lil silkie got a pretty good gash on it's head. So, be careful.
Wow! What a beautiful day!! Been outside working in the garden, putting it to bed. Sad, tho. It means winter is coming.

Hope you all can enjoy.

Thnks ladies for the advice. I will wait a little while before trying again. I am going to try the tote idea too! Great idea!
