My mom always brined the turkey. She would thaw it in the refrigerator in salt water. After it thawed she removed the giblet package and rinsed it before putting it in fresh brine for another 24 hours. Don't remember much more than that because she always complained so much about all the work of cooking so I avoided the kitchen for the week preceding any holiday.

RaZ - I love your new signature, but I think you should add Out of the Closet Chicken Groper!

Hillbilly - That is the most beautiful Ameracana hen I have ever seen! I love black chickens and she is shiny blue/green black! Gorgeous.

I thought chickens KNEW where their house was....

I just came back in from locking up. I first went to lock up the silkies, since they are in the garage. What do I find? My 2 GLW's have decided to bunk in there tonight. I tried to get them to go back out the cat door, but I guess they didn't want to get wet! I tried to get them to go in the silkie coop, but then the silkies came back out! AH, heck with it.

I went to close up the big coop and I took a 12in sub loaf out to them. I got a great deal with one of the subways here. I get their day old bread for my chickens. YEAH! The bread is still soft, and a store would consider it fresh, but subway does not. Well, anyway, I am in chicken bread for the winter. What do those fools do? THEY decide that coming out of the coop to run around in the dark and the rain might be a "FUN TIME". I get finally get Oscar and Veena (SLW) back in the coop and closed up, and I head back to the garage. I still can't get the girls to go out of the garage! SO, I block off the cat door, throw a half a loaf in the silkie coop for the four of them. WTH! Crazy butt hens. I hope they do go in the coop before I go to work. That way I can close that door and open up the cat door so she can go out. Right now she's in with them. Good thing she thinks chickens are not worth the effort.

Now why would they go and do that? I don't even have a roost in the silkie coop. Well, I do actually. BUT its only about 2 inches from the wall and about 4 inches off the coop floor. Its a freaking converted dog house! Sheesh.

I totally love my chickenses.

Nova...you should know that chickens do whatever they like when ever they like! lol
Hopefully tomorrow night they'll all be in their right places!!!

Thanks Andy and HBH

This thread is so active that it's hard to keep up with if you're gone even a day! I'm also doing an online class through EMU so that takes up a lot of my computer time that I would normally spend on here.

Raining here. Just as well since I have a lot of papers to grade.

If my birds don't start laying better the only names they are going to have it "gone". They all went though a severe molt and now are growing back in so they having returned to laying. This morning I actually had to go to the store to buy eggs. That certainly tends to affect your patience with hens.
