My gosh, people, you have been chatty today!! Took forever to catch up, and I was caught up this morning.
Angela, I have a polish bantam, and she's one of my favorites. Full of personality. She thinks she's a big girl. Climbs the fencing if I don't open up her gate quick enough. She makes me laugh all the time. I would like to get more.
Can't remember if there were other posts that I wanted to respond to. Well... good night all. Sleep tight.

Raz, like most animals (including us) chickens do better if they have a period of darkness at night. Maybe you are already using a red light? It doesn't take a whole lot of light to disrupt their natural cycles.

Yes, it's a red heat lamp in the coop. It's housed in a clamp-on holder with a hood and it faced straight down onto the work bench.

Your comment about light makes me wonder though...The neighbor behind me has one of those mercury vapour lights on the back of his house and I get residual light that comes through the window. Not a lot but could it still be too much?

That's the trouble living in the 'burbs, way too much light pollution.

AngelaB- I have two Polish girls. First of all I think they're beautiful (mine are buff laced) funny looking, crazy, all in one. Every time my twin 3 year olds see them they say "there's the Polish chicken with the funny hair". I really think they're wacky. They have crazy personalities, and by that I mean I think they could be committed to the crazy chicken asylum. They don't seem to see very well with all those feathers on their head, they have a hard time finding treats as fast as the others, and seem to startle easy due to the diminished sight angles. I did have a roo that was just awesome looking, however he was extremely rough on the girls. The eggs are very small, white, and not laid really often. I just read back and I'm not sure I have given a glowing review of the breed. That being said, I think they're awesome to have in a backyard flock, good conversation topic with friends. And if I can ever find someone who managed to have a Turken mixed with a Polish, with the naked neck and Tina Turner hair I would probably pay a good amount of money for those chicks.

I found someone who wants my rooster!
I am taking the dont ask dont tell approach- but he is driving all the way from Canton, so hopefully he has a large harem waiting for my roo.
He is going to pick him up Saturday.

Angela- I have three scatterbrains,,,,I mean, Polish pullets. Maybe they are still called chicks. I ordered six and stuck them under my broodies in ummm,,,June? maybe. I cant remember when it was.
I lost three of them to various things. One was sick and didnt stay under mama hen, the other one got wet- as in 'got into a water puddle' and then had gotten chilled/didnt stay under mom...and one because I think it got spooked and ran out into the yard instead of back toward the coop,,,but the remaining three goofs are doing very well. They are extremely flightyand are convinced that I am out there to butcher them,,,every time I go in their yard. lol. But, I like them.

I tried to get a picture of the three of them hanging out in the lean-to being truant, not wanting to go in the coop at dark (the other hens were all in)..but they thought I was trying to butcher them with a flashing radar gun:

Morning everyone.

Has anyone noticed any of their hens laying more than the others? I was a bit surprised this morning when I went out for the morning rounds to see yet another green egg. That's 5 this week so far. I have 28 girls and they have only been laying an average of 4 a day (this has been for @ 2 months now and is way down from 22 a day)so I thought it a bit amazing that my EE is laying almost daily as compared to the others.

If you trim the polish's crest every once in awhile, it'll help with them not freaking out at every sudden movement. Mine comes running to me for her treats, and if she's in her run, she really tells me that I'd better be giving her treats or else. If she doesn't want to wait, she'll just climb over the fencing and fly out. Caught her on top of my big coop! We had sidewalks poured in our backyard, so I had to keep the chickens in, of course. One of the men freaked out... comes yelling to me saying that funny looking little chicken just climbed out of her pen. They all enjoyed her and got such a kick out of her. A couple were my husband's students and asked about Cruelella often.
