Chicken grandma
I really don't know how they ended up with one leg each, I assume the guy next door had traps out and they stepped in them. All I know for sure is that one morning I was heading to work and they came waddling through 1 foot deep snow and made themselves at home in my bushes. They did cluck at me on the way by.( it's nice to be acknowledged)
I built them a temporary house until I could find them a home. I made the mistake of naming them ..... After that they were part of the family and I discovered that chickens are not stupid but rather smart and just a lot of fun to have around.
After they were killed by the coons we said we would get more one day. We finally did through rescuing the nine we have now.
I forgot how much I enjoyed their clucking . The new girls "talk" to you all the time your in the run or coop and they have stopped getting out of my way when I am trying to get around.
Sorry to hear about your flock.

What a great story. It would be neat to see any chicken photos - especially the one legged. Did they hop?
Must have!

What part of the state are you in? We are all over the state on this thread.

Thank you for the condolances. I was just thinking that I sure am glad I only had three hens at the time the respiratory infection showed up.
I am still trying to sort out how it happened.
Unfortunately, my favorite hen ever was infected.
She was a little bantam d'uccle who would stand on my foot and look up at me and talk. She loved to be held. Best little hen ever- honored to have had her.

We are about 30 miles south of Lansing , kind of between everywhere and close to nothing.

I am sure I have pics of the girls somewhere I will try to get them up soon.
They would mostly get around by hopping but if I came out with some goodies or called them they would do this low level high speed one footed flying hop. Those 2 girls could get to me faster than Patty who had both legs.
Irene was like your hen, she would come and sit on my feet when I was working in the garden. She would have to inspect every shovel full of dirt for bugs. After looking it over she would get back on my foot and wait for the next shovel full.
I hope our new chickens get to be that friendly. I am sure they will they already meet us at the gate.

You are near some byc chicken lovers I believe!
And in June everyone meets in Lansing for a get together, not sure of the date yet.

Yes, chickens sure tame up easy. I am not sure I want a chicken who is that dependant on me again!
Bobbi used to gaze at the kitchen window looking for me - it was a little much..... great once in my lifetime, but I would prefer the chickens to bond to each other, not me.
The d'uccle was very passive and on the bottom of the pecking order. Looked to me for companionship and since I garden, I was a great companion!

Those are beautiful hens! I love how they bunch up at one end of the perch!

The first flock was pretty close to my wife and I, but they sure stuck together. I am sure their affection towards me was stomach based. Irene actually spent more time being close to us than the others but most of the time the three of them were together destroying the landscaping or hiding from me in the pine trees.
Thanks for the compliment on my girls I am not sure what the blonde colored ones are. They are all different shades so they may be crosses of some sort.

& welcome to all the new folks! It is wonderful to see so many new folks joining in here.

chicken grandma, so sorry for your loss. I to would be happy to get you started up again if you would like.

Back to the foot Dr. today. Everything looks good so far. Still no report from pathology. Stitches can come out next week. I still have to stay off of it as much as possible.

Grandma - I'm so sorry about your chickens. We all know how much your little Bobbi meant to you. You did the right thing in not allowing them to get sicker and finally end up suffering. You are indeed a very strong person.

Oh, Nancy, I am so sorry. Losing pets is so hard, even worse when you have to do it to be responsible pet owner.

about the ducks, the fence is 4 feet high now. Buttheads still got out. They really want to be in that stream! Lol. I do not blame them. Water is crack for ducks. So, the previous owners are going to bring the wood that will be needed to build 6ft high walls with wire fencing and netting to the top. Their wings are clipped, but the little suckers figured out how to climb over the one fence before I put up the higher fence, and then found a way out of the 4 ft fence by cutting under the corner of the raised coop. I have their coop up on cinders so it doesn't sit directly on the ground. How could I have missed that! Well anyway, they will get supervised freedom tomorrow. Lol. They just love that fresh water. Lol. They even made friendly with a stray duck. We tried to catch that one too, but it was having none of it and it took off. Lol

I finally caught up the post since Sunday. I had a dobey runt. I had her fixed as promised and she was the sweetest ever dog. However she was scrappy. I used to take her with me to antique fair in Allegan, when I would help my gran do her selling. Well anyway, always took Lacey with because she was so people friendly. I did not have her ears done so she just looked super sweet and dopey. She also topped out at 55 pounds. Like I said runt. Well this lady who had her booth inside decided that my "p.o.s." needed showing up and brought her big standards met money round, then took hers off the leash and commanded it to kill my girl. There where plenty of witnesses to this. So, her dog attacked mine. Her big male out weighed my little girl by about 40 pounds. My little girl sent that big stud to the vet. The police came bandage tried to get me in trouble and force me to pay the vet bill to sew her dog back up, but nope. Was able to prove it was her fault. And she nearly killed her own dog just to show off. So... I had to take lacey home... But I came back with my rot instead. Lol. She was with out a doubt one of my favorite dogs. That was about 15 yrs ago.

I want to get a big slobbery bull mastif next... Or maybe a Pyrenees or burmese. I love my little dogs... But I really am a big dog type of girl.

9chickens- I think they look like Buff Orps, but they also look a little like Lemon Orps. Someone recently (and with this group could be fifty pages ago) posted a link with pictures of Lemon Orps. They look slightly lighter in color than most Buffs I have seen. Whatever they are, they are really beautiful!
