taprock- she is just lovely. I hope to get a trio of them in the spring. Only the standard size ones. Thank you for all the info. It is deeply appreciated. And the one I have will most defantially be spoiled.

babygirl22 thank you. My temp in incubator is 99.7. At least I have hope now.

Hello. I am from Olivet ( Duck Lake area). Centrally located between Marshall, Albion, Charlotte, and Springport. My husband and my son builds my coops and I got a lot of my chicks from a breeder up by Muskegon.
Welcome to the Michigan thread.

Opa, I am from Ann Arbor but am familiar with most of SE Michigan and frequent Detroit suburbs.

There is a place in Brighton that I've found which builds coops and has chicks for sale, and they seem like really great people. Has anyone gone through a place in Brighton?

I'm just east of you in an outlaw chicken city...
I got my chicks from TSC as day-old peepers, then a pair of older bantams from 1Muttsfan.
I built my own coop(s) inside my garage.

I didn't know about the Brighton place. What kind of chicks do they have? I want to add a couple of Jersy Giants to my flock.

I'm at EMU weekly as well as Matthaei Botanical Garden.

How do you manage to keep chickens in an outlaw chicken city? I live in a neighborhood with an association that is trying to prevent me from keeping chickens, but I am pleading my case that all will be done tastefully without disrupting the peace. I've got a great sort of courtyard area where I wanted to put the coop, so nobody would even know about the chickens. Probably would have been better off just doing it quietly without notifying the association.

The Brighton place has all sorts of chickens. I'll message you their info.

I spend a lot of time at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in the spring/summer/fall. It's glorious!

Windy as all get-out last night. Lots of branches down in the yard and a couple of loose panel on the patio roof. Chicken fence was partially open so the girls were free ranging again. At least I checked before letting the dogs out.

I go out to round them up and only find 5, seems that one BLA is absent. (This is where the audience gasps and says "Oh, dear".)

Next I go to the coop to get the treats which will always bring out the stragglers from their hidey-holes. (This part gives the audience a glimmer of hope.)

Slowing opening the coop door with a conga line of 5 hens trailing behind, (This part gives the audience suspense and a visual for their imagination.)

the door opens and I hear a scream! Buh-KWAH! A flurry of grey feathers leap from the nest box unto my shoulder.(The audience is startled.)

The hero (me) recovers quickly (as heroes are wont to) and peers in the nest box, (Audience grows anxious.)

and finds 2 green bantam eggs in the same box. (Audience sighs with relief and applause begins. Cue happy background music. End scene with a fade.)

So. Many. Posts.

I can't keep up. So... welcome to all newbies, congratulations to all those accomplishing great things and condolences to any of those that have experienced losses or other such disappointing developments as of late.

Oh and words of wisdom and knowledge for all having questions.

What? That doesn't work?

I've got my seed catalogs gathered 'round today and am making out orders and checking them twice. Only 99 days until the 2012 planting begins in my little corner of the Great Lakes State. It's a big number, but a promising one since it means there is a light at the end of this long, cold tunnel we're about to enter. And I can't complain too much, I suppose, since I was working in the garden as recently as Monday of this week.

I keep them within a portable fence in the yard that I can move around to give them greater or lesser forage areas, as well as exclude them from the dogs and the garden areas that I don't want them in.

This is a small flock of only 6 hens. I did have an issue with the woman next door who went mental on me and complained about the rooster and ducks. So I had to get rid of the ducks and roos. The neighbor behind is an old-timer who actually appreciates the eggs and honey I give him. No other issues with the other neighbors. I am also not all that concerned about ordinance enforcement as the city has had severe cut-backs in all departments. I keep everything as clean, quiet and hidden as possible.

I would be more concerned if I lived in an association neighborhood. I find that the boards are usually power-hungry jerks who think they have god-like powers. Good luck pleading your case, maybe you can bribe them with fresh eggs.

An aside: I tried to show the neighbor one of the green eggs yesterday and she says, "I'm not touching that dirty thing."
