Chickmate....the pic early was Dusty my bantam Roo. I posted the pic because he didn't want to put his feet down in the snow, he was standing on one leg. Here is a pic of my little hen Sparrow who likes to fly.....it was taken the other day before we got snow.

OK, now THAT looks like a hen, and a cutie at that!

It's snowing and blowing here and all the chooks are standing in the open door of the run looking out. They don't like snow so much so I wonder what they'll do when we have a couple of feet of it!

I let the dogs out one last time before bed around 1:45 this morning and there was a fox barking/yipping on the other side of the pond just into the woods. So glad my run is Ft. Knox. Only got 4 eggs so far today, but I have been hearing the egg song as I type, so there should be more to come.

You guys are making me crazy with all this talk of hatching. I'm starting to think I'd like to try it, but no. Well, maybe. No. Just a few. No. Not till spring. Well, maybe just a few. No!

MIne are not fond of it.

Last winter, we let the chickens out to free range. They usually don't get much snow in their runs because of the balsam firs and cedars in their run tend to keep the worst of the snow off. So, our EE roo was thrilled to get out. However, he realized he didn't like snow. He walked a circle, all the hens following him like a parade, and walked right back into the run and didn't come out.

I DO want to, I just don't really have a place to keep chicks. I have no garage, no basement, only the coop. . . . and a brooder (NO!). . . . . .that. . . . . I could (NO!). . . . . set up (NO!). . . . . in. . . . the other. . . . . . shed (NO, NO, NO!). . . . if I just move the lawn tractor over a bit (NO!)

Well I'm glad it's not just my chickens. I can't remember if my GF's chicken where fond of the snow.....they must of been. He had a huge pen/run to house them in and I know for a fact it wasn't wrapped & covered like mine. I've been told my chickens are pampered!! lol

Thanks everyone for the compliments on my christmas present.

I worried all night. Any parents would understand, you know how when your baby first comes home and you check over and over to see if they're breathing? Well, that's kinda how I was with Rosie last night. I bet I went out there 10 times to check on her. Of course she never left her straw fort she built until it was time to eat this morning. Then of course since I worried all night I was tired all morning lol.

I went out a little while ago to feed everyone and I see both pigs have some bloody spots on their ears and noses. I know they have to get used to each other but I hate seeing that. They were ok at feeding time this afternoon. Aric had a dog house he built out to the road he was trying to sell so he took that and put it next to and behind Bella's so now Rosie has her own place. Hopefully they will eventually be able to share the big coop Bella's had.

I'm a little upset because I've tried for several days to get mini pig food and no one has it. The TSC manager said they are getting rid of a lot of products, I just hope that's not one of them! Family Farm & Home stopped carrying it too!

Can anyone help me? Someone on facebook asked me these two questions and I don't want to give her the wrong information!

keyt, do you know if what i've heard is true ... that eggs cooled below 45 degrees (i.e. any modern fridge would be below that) loose an enzyme that breaks down cholesterol ... thereby room temp-stored eggs have the enzyme and have less net cholesterol ... also, when you replace the bloom on your eggs, can you store them unrefrigerated?
