Sam's smoked chicken...

Its sooo good, its what I talk about all year. SOOO yummy, and I bought one to bring home- now my hubby has tasted it..quite a bargain..I get to bring home chickens and he gets to eat a smoked one..(well, part of one- because I will share, cuz I vowed to- otherwise it would be all mineminemine...)

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cold out there.
Makes me wonder why I keep chickens- have to go out in that cold to feed em and water em, I dont even bother looking for eggs because I know better, lol. If my hens are walking around, theres no egg- or else they would be trying to hatch it.

Maybe this year, I am going to put a few turkey eggs under these silkies..
but which breed to pick?
Midget whites?
Which breed grows the gentlest toms?
I want a big one to name Mr. Gobbles....

Farmerboy- didja say you were going to raise Turkeys?

And has anyone heard how Penelope and Henry are doing in the snow? Do they like it? Are they complaining about it?

Hillbilly, your birds are stunning! I want to know too, is it the breeding that makes their barring so different from all the other BRs I've seen? Are they SQ birds? Do all the birds from that line have the same barring?

I have a question about frozen eggs. How do you know if an egg has frozen and do you just have to pitch them if they do? I have not been able to get out to the coop until almost dark for two days in a row due to company and appointments. Tonight by the time I got back from picking up chicken food at TSC it was 5:00 and everyone was up to roost. Their feeder was empty so I had to fill it tonight as I'll be gone again tomorrow. I turned the light on and they were all like "what the ???" I have a light out in the run as well and when I started filling the feeder they all came out to eat and get some fresh warm water. I brought Mama out to poop and eat and drink and noticed that someone added an egg to her nest. I was so sure that wouldn't happen that I didn't mark the original four that I gave her. Now there is another green EE egg and I don't know which is the original. Tomorrow I'm going to mark the ones in the nest so I can take out any new ones. What do I do about the extra egg? It obviously won't hatch until several days after the first four, so will she continue to set until they have all hatched? So after everyone was back up on the roosts I picked up five eggs that were super cold and may be frozen. What do the rest of you do with them and is there a way to tell without breaking them to see? Kind of dumb question, but who knows? Not me!

They are heratige and I do think believe they are SQ. I believe that the barring is different because they are not the hatchery type. Yes all the birds in this line have that wonderful barring. Here is the thread on them https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=399477&p=1

Chickmate, the only eggs that I knew for sure were frozen were ones that split open. I know someone on BYC that had a broody hen actually hatch two babies 2 or 3 weeks apart. The mama hen will decide when to leave the nest.

Looks like we're gonna have to eat more hamburgers and hot dogs or Sam's going to be smoking chicken for days!
Hopefully tomorrow I can put deposit down for the pavillion. Stay tuned.....

Ummm, Farmerboy, let me know how new those clothes look when you get home from milking cows

Were you able to finish the fencing before this winter blast hit?

Yep, my snowsuit had cow manure splatter on it, and my coat had a BIG smear of cow manure on the arm, of course it had cow manure perfume on all of my clothing. Sniff, mmm smells nice.

I am probably considered a freak.

Well, we got all of the T-posts in, and 1 roll of barb wire on, but have lots more to go. I just brought more insulators for the wires. We will have 4 strands of wire instead 2, so we will not have to chase cows often. I will work more outside today in the sunshine, but its 19 degrees out. Brrrr

I don't think so, I think you are a hard working young man...who really gets into his work
