Actually it has happened a few times. My last year as Engineer Officer on the icebreaker KATMAI BAY was 2001 BTW. It was an easy year for us but the St. Mary's still was our main focus to keep the channel open for the 1000 footers. My grandfather told me stories about the lakes freezing over completely but nowadays they seem to stay open all winter allowing ships to move about freely.

I wish I knew as much about farm criiters as I do ships - thanks again for the advise about golfballs. Now my hens are brooding on them, ha ha!

I hope you make it to Chickenstock, John. I'd like to bend your ear about ships, especially Great Lakes shipping.

It was so nice, I fired up the alcohol powered wood machine. Er, that's me using the chain saw and splitter while enjoying a barley pop.

Finally got that 600lb oak crotch cut. It was 3 big branches coming from the main trunk. I counted over 90 rings of the main trunk before the branching. And it is such beautifully grained wood. I need to get a portable sawmill.

Taking a break before I finish off the last 4 from the 6-pack. But I still have to stack what I split and clean up the wood chips. Gotta love a sharp chain.
