Anyone that read my issue about my hen that is paralyzed is still the same. She's alert and pecks at scratch but either way she's probably going home soon. It's tough when you only have 3 hens to start with. Raising them from day olds makes it tougher fo me. I got one response as to what it may be and without an avain vet I guess I'll really never know. For anyone that did not read my post this bird went from full vigor to a stumble overnight and then stilted legs the next day. She lays on her side but her feet can still clutch a little. Adding new birds will be problematic for me since I'd like to introduce new birds that have aged a bit. I have room for 6 birds in my coop so I need to figure out how I can get new ones in with my two BR hens. On a brighter note the snowmen my grandson and Mommy made are still standing!

Very sorry to hear about your hen uchytil.

It's really cool that the snowmen are still standing!

For the first time ever, every girl gave me an egg! I'm finally starting to get a backlog of eggs.

The other day I opened the door to the nest boxes and found Neil, my rooster, setting on an egg. Such a silly boy. Makes me sad to think I have to get rid of him come spring. I was lucky enough to get one of those good roos and unlucky enough that I can't have roos in my neighborhood. I'm just hoping I can find a home for him that's bigger than a stew pot.

Congrats on the eggs sj3364!

You guys weren't kidding when you said this thread moves fast! I walked away to get coffee, and got side tracked watching the squirrels play in the middle of the yard. Came back to finish my post and I'd already missed a few posts...LOL!

What Nova said...

What with homework and it being too cold to be outside, I have the computer on for most of the day.

So I can check the forum quite often. But those long periods when I'm on campus and y'all are extra chatty...

I let the dogs out before it was light and the chickens were standing up by the gate in the dark. Now why would those silly hens want to leave a nice warm coop and stand out in the cold and dark? It might be because the wind blew out the window of the coop at some point. I went out after it got light and found the broken window on the ground. So I'll have to venture out for some clear plastic for a temporary repair. <insert cuss word>

Today is the speak out against SOPA / PIPA so internet might be wonky, so it might be a good time to do some real chores.

eta: just noticed that I topped a thousand posts. I guess it's me who is so chatty.

uchytil, paralized birds are often still alert and respond to you, sometimes they will even eat a little but usually not a normal amount. Unfortunately I agree with Fife, she is unlikely to make a recovery. It does sound like Marek's ,but the best way to be sure is to have her tested after she is put down. If that is not possible, you may want to consider only adding birds that were vaccinated as chicks.

I looked up Marek's Disease in my book and the symptoms are almost word for word what the text says. Recovery, if possible, is often only temporary. Sadly, I too have to agree with muttsfan and Fife.

MamaFeathers. Nova is right. Some days this thread might move only a page or two, some days it move 10 or more easily. I was off for a few days recently because of internet issues and when I got back on I had @ 40 pages I had missed.

John, so sorry about your hen. How old is she? Is it possible that she got into some moldy feed?

Did you just get them? What breeds? We need pics of the chicks , not the box!

It will be great! You will wonder why you only got 12!
All of your questions have been answered in text and picts. Just don't know where they went. My plan worked though. To meet the info out gradually and add to interest. More to come I tried to do a multi Quote and answer thing.
