Lessons learned today while cleaning the coop:
1. When spreading pine chips, make sure your pant legs are uncuffed.
2. When dumping 150 pounds of feed into the big metal can, make sure it is place exactly where you want it to be for the next several weeks.
3. Chickens will try to drink the beer you left on the shelf.

That is all............................................................................................................................................for now.

Gave the hens the new feed today. They attacked the feeder like they haven't eaten for a week!

Apparently they like the new layer mix: Organic Corn, Organic Roasted Soybeans, Organic Oats, Organic Spelt, Organic Barley, Organic Wheat, Poultry Mineral Concentrate, Calcium Carbonate, Organic Kelp, Organic Molasses.

Also got them some oats and spelt. It's a regular smorgasboard here.

RaZ,
I have observed amazing behavior from chickens over the years. It does not surprise me that your bantam misses her friend. She also may be somewhat traumatized from the hawk attack.

I had one chicken find it's friend dead one morning. She came and told me. Then she went with me to bury her friend and looked into the hole that I placed her friend in. Then she want back to the flock but she made a noise that they often make when they see a hawk, a kind of purring. She did that a lot for a couple days and she checked the sky a lot. My daughter said that since she had found her friend dead, she was more on alert for predators.

I have also heard of a pair of chickens and when the rooster died the hen pined. Then she died in the exact same spot 3 days later. Chickens bond deeply with each other and with humans. They are beautiful creatures inside and out!

About the feed RaZ - they like the molasses. I would like to find a feed that is not primarily soy or corn. We get enough of that in our processed foods.

I had this thought when I found my black chicken dead. She was constantly with the rooster I rehomed. She was his side-kick.

chicken grandma, that's why I got the extra oats and spelt. All of my critters get a variety of healthy foods. I'm the only animal here living on Ramen noodles (and beer).

It's been a long time since I had a horse, I guess I forgot those lessons.

Raz, keeping horses teaches you all those same lessons. Including the beer.

Had a pony that would chug anything you left within reach, though she did seem particularly fond of gatorade and pepsi. She'd have put frat boys to shame. She'd put her mouth over the top of the bottle or can, and tip it straight up. Chug, chug, chug and it'd be gone. Little stinker.

She was a spitfire, but knew her job and taught the kids well.

Now we just have a pig who likes to steal things and hide them in her wallow. At last count she'd buried a bucket, two feed scoops, a battery operated drill, three hammers, a whole pack of zip ties.... well, you get the idea. LOL! At pushing 400 lbs she now plays with hardwood pallets like they're legos.

Good thing she's friendly.

Mom2emall... that has to be one of the cutest chicks ever! Looks like a little pterodactyl! Call it Terri for short!

Isn't there anyone out there in MI that would like some free geese and ducks? I've been trying here and Craigs list (I did have a $ set on CL, cause I didn't want to attract the wrong kind of person) to re-home these birds. The DH doesn't like them (cause they poop a lot) so he wants me to get rid of them. I've got 1 Emdon, 1 African (with an angle wing), 1 Indian runner (fawn) and a drake Peking.... the girls have all laid a bunch of eggs for us last summer. They aren't aggressive. They can go all together or split into just the geese or just the ducks, but they're attached to each other so I don't want the pairs split up if I can help it. (I'm trying to avoid freezer camp)

Please PM me if anyone's interested. thanks

Wednesday, my sweet little Great Aunt died.... she was over 100 years old. She was living on her own up until about a month ago when she fell. SO... I have to go to her funeral on Monday in GR. All my life (and it's been a while), she sent everyone in the family a birthday card with a new 2$ bill (till we were 18) and a Christmas card with a cute letter without fail.

I've tried weaning myself from BYC.. but resistance is futile... you're all stuck with me and my opinions........sorry in advance for my bluntness of any future opinions!

Welcome to all the newbies!

My DH and I are going to Vegas for our Anniversary next weekend! Can't wait. We've been married 16 yrs, but together for 20! Then February, I'm going to the Filmore in Detroit for another KoRn concert! I'm totally geeked about that! I'm a HUGE KoRn fan!! I also love architecture, so I can't wait to see the Filmore it's self.
