I'd recommend you read The Nutrient Requirements of Poultry for a more thorough understanding of the interplay between certain nutrients as well as what exactly "excess protein" is. ;)

"They are totally not talking about sex yet.
And unfortunately they didnt come with any blue or pink diapers.
Any other way to tell?"

Some people can vent-sex young chicks but I have no idea how it is done.

sooner or later, they will give themselves up..and when it happens, there has to be a couple extra girls in the bunch. I will go out there and tell them that they are Raz's girls..and teach them to be on the watch for your groping ways...

it is much worse than chicken groping.

A different method i heard of is to wait 6 weeks, then look at their wing feathers. A rooster supposably has very long feathers at the wing tips, and a hen has all short ones on hers. I only bought 1 chick last year, and she had all short ones. Anyone else ever hear this? For those of you who are hatching chicks i would be curious to know how accurate this is. The guy who told me this showed me a brown/black "rooster chick", and i know his breeding stock and according to the Kippenger chicken calculator his boys should indeed have been brown/black and the hens white/black. He did not know this when he showed me, so ?

I would of had a royal hissy fit, would of probably said some not so nice things.....like being Brain Dead or something!! I hope you were able to salvage it!!

Is that the mythical "delivery" charge?

We had that problem too, until my DH switched to Google Chrome. I think it came with one of his games or something.

There is some information on feeding in Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens which is kind of a thumbnail sketch of protein needs of your flock. It's not all that scientific of a reading, but can be a decent starting point. But it doesn't get into any depth of nutrient interplay or how nutrients are processed by your chickens.

Nutrition is a science unto itself and too "heavy" for me as well. The best I can do is offer a broad variety of the best food(s) I can afford and make certain that I don't starve my animals by feeding them inferior stuff. My chickens, cats and dogs all eat better than I do.

Just show them my picture. The girls will run toward it and the boys will fly the other way.

My babies are still stuck to Mom like glue- and they are what? five weeks old now? I figure they will ride out the winter under Moms feathers. She hasnt taken them out into the elements yet- they were peeking out at the snow today. None seemed very enthused.
I was just thinking (yeah, I know, a dangerous endeavor), I wonder if I gave Gravy a couple of young peeps and quarantined them together, if she would take to them and nurture them.
They would be quarantined here in the living room which would be kind of fun for all involved.
