my silkie is busy at the moment... She did great! She's surrogate mama to my 1 pure fav chick.... I need more silkie hens... Hawk took one, also my Buffy, my fav hen... Yes, please PM me her info. Maybe I will order a dozen in 2 months or so. Both my broody girls should be done with their current brood. Thanks so much! And YAY! On placing 3rd for Fudge. My roo is very laid back also. He likes his comb rubbed.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing! I only had an ISA, BR, FBCM and an EE egg for Mama to set and the only one I can tell for sure is the most obvious little BR rooster.

You all know about the peacock that flew away, and got brought back? Well, on Saturday, I wanted to take a good look at him (Its a he for sure), so I grabbed him, and looked at his head, and saw that he had a running nose, a watery eye, and a puffy sinus. My first thought was ''OH NO, NOT MG!! PLEASE!
He has looked like what my turkey hen had last year that resulted destroying my flocks last fall. I had the vet come today, and he drew some blood out of the sick peacock, and 2 roos just to be sure-an Icelandic roo, and a Tomaru roo, and he will send the blood sample to the state lab to be tested. I will know the results within a week. I am so depressed that there may be a chance that I will have to kill everything, if the test results comes back positive for Mycoplasma G.
I just can't believe that its happening again, I had disinfected everything, and did not let anyone besides family members (I am the only one in the family that has poultry) pass the driveway, and this is happening. I am praying that is something else that is not serious, then I will not have to kill all of my baby chicks, and adult birds that I have. It hurts.
All the birds are confined in their pens until further notice. As soon the test results comes back, and if it is positive, then I will have to do that I have never done- kill everything on site, I do not wait to wait too long this time, just get it done and over with, but I pray that the test comes back negative.

Oh Daron, I'm saying some prayers that you don't have to go through that again! Good thing you called the vet immediately. Let us know as soon as you can, we're all waiting to hear.

How does everyone keep the bad animals out of their coops? I am thinking of using chicken wire with a strand of hot wire and the bottom and one a few feet higher. We live out in the woods so the darn wild life like to visit me.

As others have said, chicken wire will not keep predators out. Use welded wire or hardware cloth and bury it about a foot or more. Check out the coops section for some good advice on building your coop and run. Good luck Kimmie!

kimmie, use hardware cloth. Chicken wire is death wire when you've got coins that are persistent.

Oh yeah, I forgot about those persistent coins, you can't keep them out with chicken wire.

OH.........sorry, I stuck it out with the original model... their value actually increase as they age, if you can hang on to them long enough! LOL! Just don't enable them to leave socks out... every sock you have to pick up, will go to good will (or hidden in the attic).......eventually, they won't have any socks at all....

LOL! That wouldn't stop my brood. They love to wear mismatched pairs all the time. I see polka dot socks with checkered or striped ones daily.

Well, me and my group have been doing an early spring cleaning the last couple of days. Boy, am I tired, but we got the job done. Believe it or not while cleaning, my daughter found 2 pots that I had put away last year that had hyacinths in them and they were sprouting through the dirt. DH was so excited by that find. He is super eager for spring!

Unfortunately, we also had an incident with my roo Red today. My son took a break to see to the animals and I heard him shouting for me while out there. I sent my youngest daughter out and she came back in saying Red was bleeding really bad. My other roo Newton has been really going at him lately. I got out to the coop and there was blood everywhere. The waterer, the feeder, up the corner...just everywhere. I grabbed poor Red and he was bleeding so bad from his comb which is now missing it's top 2 points. I felt so bad for the boy. I took him inside and got him cleaned up as best I could and he's now in my doggy crate hospital wing. I don't know what I'm going to do about him and Newton or how I'm going to re-integrate him. Any advice would be really appreciated. Here's a pre-attack pic from summer of my Red.
