Farmerboy - I'll let you know if the humming continues. I am very excited because I haven't heard it since the electric company came out and put a new meter on the side of my house. Could that have been it?
Otherwise, I will take you up on your offer!

I am legally blind but you would never know it because my vision is correctable to 20/40 but without my special contacts I am 20/2500. YEAH for technology!

For years I've heard people lament about the "good old days". However, when one considers all of the technological advances in recent years that allow us to live longer and more productive years those folks are mistaken.

When Granny first moved in with us four years ago she was almost debilitated with pain, almost blind, close to immobile. Improvements in medications and proper diagnostic care lead to a lessening of arthritis pain, a hip replacement now allows her to walk, and monthly injections into her retina allows her to see. The "good old day" are now.

I have to agree with Opa.
In 1998 I had carpal tunnel surgery that restored my hands. The same year, I had eye surgery that restored my vision.

Welcome b737 - Great to have you in the group!

RaZ - So sorry someone made a big mistake and missed out on a fun night with a really nice guy.

This is a very nice clip for us Michigan Girls and you guys will enjoy it to!

Very cute to see Mama and all four babies up high on the roost today. Didn't have the camera with me.

If anybody lives in the Milan area, and would like to show off their coops (and chickens), I'd be happy to come by for a visit to peck your brain (I mean pick). I am pretty clueless about lots of things chicken, so any advice you fellow Michiganders can pass on, will be much appreciated.
Howdy, b737! I'm located at the west edge of Scio Township--about a 30 minute drive from Milan (depending on where in Milan you are...) You are welcome to come "peck" my brain for what it's worth. I'm still very much learning about chickens myself, and I'm small scale--currently 10 hens, 3 geese. My first chicks came from My Pet Chicken, and they (and Meyer, from which MPC gets its birds) will do as few as a 3 chick order, though probably at a higher price per chick than where you're looking. I myself wanted a big variety of breeds, got only one or two of each, and have had very few aggression problems. I've also very carefully introduced new birds a few times with good success. But I've been lucky I know. If the drive doesn't seem too far for you, I'd be glad to show you what I like and what hasn't worked so well in the coop I have. I've been very pleased with the over-the-top security features we put in, for example--I have lost a few over the last few years to predators, but only when they were out free ranging, never (so far, knock on wood!) had a predator get into the coop (even though when there is new snow I often see mink or weasel tracks all around the coop in the morning, including on the steps up to the chickens' pop door. I had the coop made for me but we beefed up the security measures considerably. And it's very sturdy and weathertight so far. So that's the good. But I'd also be glad to show you the things that don't work so well, like the placement of the nest boxes that limit where roosts, food, and water can fit. Also, as almost anyone will tell you, no matter the size of the coop you start with, you will soon wish it was bigger! But, if you are doing the work yourself to convert the playhouse, you will probably have the skills to expand or build another coop later... Anyway, if you're interested in seeing the setup I have, PM me... More information is always good to have, even if it's what not to do! --Susan

This may be an odd question. How much do chickens poop after they go to roost at night?
The reason I ask is that Uggo Lemon and BLA Gravy are bedded down side by side and Pepper is sound asleep right under their rumps.

I suppose I'll find out in the morning if Pepper got pooped on.

Thanks guys, for the pickup offers! I will have to sweet talk DH and see if that gets anywhere ;) It would be really neat to see everyone in person. Is it a potluck too? I will have to check the links now.

It looks like a "blue". :) There are a few breeds that come in that color... (If you remember Raz's last avitar, that is what blue/lav looks like)

Hmmm. You would at that size! My rubber feed dish is only about 10" across. Basically, if it's shallow they scratch it out, if it has a lip they will stand on it and tip it. I like having more than one dish too, so the lower on the pecking order can eat at the same time without waiting. or you could make an awsome continuous feeder with one, Farmerboy just made one a week or so ago. (works like the regular feeders, but on a much huger scale, and a deeper edge to minimize scratching out food.) :) Btw, beware the friendly crew at the farm stores, they will often kindly steer you to the most expensive thing you always wanted but never needed ;) (Took most of a year and untold wasted dollars before i caught on to that one)
These guys on here know what really works.
