Usually I have good experiences at FFH, but, yesterday I was picking up some feed and saw they had the stock tanks lined up, maybe a dozen, for the new arrivals. One had "pullets" in it. Reddish brown and black"ish" with white heads. They don't bother tell you what they might be just pullets. Pricey too. The thing that was off off was one was dead and five little girls were freaking out. Not a big deal but I told the person in charge who announced, fairly loudly, that "oh my gosh them [explecitive] things have been dropping like flies" Makes me wanna get chicks there. Oh well on a good note they were giving away sample feeds so if your FFH is open you may want to see if they are doing that. The bags are fairly large and you fill em! They had rabbit, chicken, goat, horse, and some general feeds.

But isn't snow rather normal there in the winter?? Not here we are the swamp of the west.
Yes, it is normal, but, that doesn't mean I have to like it

Does anyone have any lavender chicks for sale, that i could get somehow outside of chickenstock? I would love to go, but i have no way.
fuzzybutt, you could always catch a ride with me if you could meet me at my house. I was just in Coopersville last night, it is only about 45 minutes from here. Had dinner at Sam's Joint with friends that live in Coopersville.

Yes, I'll be there....is there a list already for it? Hard to believe we're thinking about June already! :) I'll hopefully have a bunch of silkies/showgirls with me. Looks like this year I might not have to run back and forth between a rabbit show and Chickenstock, so far there isn't a show listed for that day!
Jen, check mine, Opa's or RaZ's siggys for more info on Chickenstock.

Took the boys sledding at Wabasis Lake today and saw this in a field on the way home.

COOL!

Hillbilly Hen- I've never had a hot toddy, but it sounds yummy and since I'm under the weather yet, it would be good for me, right?

Oh, it is wonderful. I had more last night and I do believe I will be having more soon.

John, which FFH would this be? I love the one in Newaygo so I hope it isn't that one. I did notice that TSC in Fremont was getting set up for their chicks, complete with the barricades.

You may be right about wild birds or the environment. I had waited until we had a very hard freeze before letting the poultry free-range, plus waited for 3 months before free-ranging. There is no way that the wild birds can get in my coop, but I have had rats getting into the feed. I had caught a few, and our puppy had killed one. Maybe it was the rats. I will know for sure if I have the disease sometime next week.
Bianca, that is a very neat picture!!!
Chicken grandma- Maybe I can come over and help ya find wherever the humming is coming from. As you know that I am deaf, and can hear with cochlear implants, and I discovered last year while working on the electric fence for the horse, that if I have my hearing device on a certain setting, I hear nothing else, but the electric ticking of the fence. My normal hearing siblings cannot hear what I can hear!!
woot.gif
Finally another advantage over my normal hearing siblings, besides turning off the devices, so I can't hear the annoying sounds.

I have tried it on electric cords, and can hear it humming, among countless electrical devices.

I also use the certain setting for when I am using the phone, for its hard enough to talk to people on the phone with the background noises. Gotta love technologies that help handicap people live as much of a normal life as normal people.

COOL, didn't know you could control cochlear implants that way

Very nice video. So nice that I shared it on my FB page.

my kids LOVE Lake Michigan, and have also wondered why more people don't live here as it is the most beautiful place in the world. Cold yes but you get snow sports for those that like and smaller bugs is a real bonus..

This may be an odd question. How much do chickens poop after they go to roost at night?
The reason I ask is that Uggo Lemon and BLA Gravy are bedded down side by side and Pepper is sound asleep right under their rumps.

I suppose I'll find out in the morning if Pepper got pooped on.
I read once 75% of pooping is done at night ,You must have had 1 DIRTY BIRD

Farmerboy, I am reading a book by Harvey Ussery, he has good reasons for deep litter, and not completley cleaning out brooders between batches of chicks. you should use kiln dried wood shavings. I think a mix of dried leaves, straw or hay and wood shavings work very well as a deep litter. I am surprised you have any respiratory problems as they are said to be from poor ventilation and your set up looks well ventilated?? I don't think you should have to worry about chooks eating to much sand, they seem to know how much is enough.Like grit and calcium

sorry bout the long post, thats what hapens when you miss a day

These stupid fruitloops are being so loud this morning, I threatened to take them all to my brother in laws. This is why they wont make chickens legal for our backyards...couple stupid birds wrecking it for an entire population.

Perhaps they would like to just be stew. Though I doubt a Polish pullet has any meat on her at all. Oh well, she can make stock.

I am extremely crabby. Because My chickens win the dumbest birds of the year award.

Somehow my broody hen managed to get OUT of the rabbit hutch that I closed off for her just about an hour ago.
I went out there and she was trying desperately to get back INSIDE. Couldnt find the way she managed to get out, obviously. Dumb hen.
She can go to my brother in laws, too.

Im going to bring my eggs back in and put them in the incubator. She lost her chance. And if the dumb polish doesnt shut up soon, I just may say "forget it" and give them all away.

What type of seed? It really is time for some things now. You're a bit south of me; not much, but a bit. And today marks 10 weeks until my average date of last frost. That's probably pretty accurate for you, too, maybe even a bit long. Cabbages, peppers, eggplants, peanuts and the like can absolutely be started now... and should. Tomatoes could be started now or within the next 2-3 weeks. The gardening season is here, go for it!

If the forecasts for a warm spring hold true we could be out there sowing in the real dirt within a couple of weeks. Peas and potatoes on St. Pats may just be a real possibility this year. Usually we have to hold off until more like Easter.

I found the best way to avoid lower roosting birds being fouled by higher ups was to provide more than enough roost boards at the same height.
